As a native Londoner, composer Philip Sparke has always been attracted to the great cities of the world, fascinated by their varied moods and human diversity. London, Chicago, Tokyo, Paris, Rome and New York all have their own characters but also share much in common. This overture is a salute to the energy and grandeur of such cities. A fantastic new concert work for moderately advanced bands.

This “Grand Overture†was commissioned by the “Nagano Community Band†- Japan- on occasion of its jubilee in 1992 and is dedicated to the band’s conductor, Ikuo Inagaki. The work is based upon three main themes, each symbolising a certain theme. The first part is characterized by its bright themes played mainly by the brass, accompanied by the woodwinds and festive percussion. This part symbolizes the jubilee which is the origin of the composition. This is followed by a bouncing allegro, in which each register of the band displays brilliant techniques. Especially the woodwinds come to the fore! This movement depicts the industriousness and enthousiasm shown by the members of the“Nagano Community Band†in the carrying out of their hobby. A third, main theme, is choral-like in character and is displayed both in the (soft) brass as well as in the warm medium register of the reeds. Here, nature’s beaty in and around the city of Nagano is musically celebrated. Following a “chamber-music episode†(featuring the flute, oboe, clarinet, alto-saxophone and horn) the initial allegro re-occurs, weaving its way towards a grandiose finale, in which the two previous themes are once again apparent. Due to its very colourful scoring and the enormous diversity of musical thoughts and ideas, this composition is a fascinating and memorable piece, worthy a jubilee overture!

Written in 1814, the Fidelio Overture was the fourth and final version chosen to open Beethoven's only opera by the same name. Though not as lengthy or grand as its three predecessors (the Leonore Overtures 1 - 3), it served its purpose as an opening statement without overshadowing the music to come. This string arrangement transposes the original key of E Major into the much more playable key of D Major. It retains the original opening which alternates between powerful majestic bursts and lyrical harmonic progressions while finishing with the energetic presto to the end. Rhythms have been simplified but are very much in the spirit of Beethoven's writing. The optional timpani gives this arrangement a symphonic quality that closely resembles the original.Written in 1814, the Fidelio Overture was the fourth and final version chosen to open Beethoven's only opera by the same name. Crescent Moon is a festive overture composed by Jan Van der Roost and was commissioned by a Japanese wind band. The piece begins solemnly in the middle register but gradually becomes brighter and more brilliant as the moon rises in the sky andbegins to give more light. The special occasion that Philip Sparke was honoured to write this piece for was the 200th anniversary of the Stadtmusik Bad Säckingen. Since Bad Säckingen is known as the ’Trompeterstadt’, or trumpeter city, Sparke’s creative process was influenced by Joseph Victor Scheffel’s poem, Der Trompeter von Säckingen (The Trumpeter from Säckingen), which is based on a true story. The overture starts with a majestic fanfare, followed by a lively molto vivace. It is joined by a brilliant trumpet call in honour of the city’s famous resident. Overture for a Special Occasion is feestelijk van sfeer.

Rimsky-Korsakov composed his three greatest orchestral works over a short period: he completed Capriccio Espagnol in 1887, and he composed Russian Easter Overture in 1888, simultaneously with the symphonic suite Scheherazade. Russian Easter Overture is a magnificent overture in a single movement that was dedicated to the composers Borodin and Moussorgsky. Several hymns of the Russian Orthodox Church create a characteristic atmosphere. Arranger Tohru Takahashi has made the sound even more colourful by using several mallet percussion instruments. Ligeti's two-act opera in four scenes, 'Le Grand Macabre', is intense, brilliant music theatre between parody and grave seriousness, between folly and wisdom. His one and only opera, which is exceptional in the entire 20th century, is full of absurdities. Therefore, it is no wonder that the 'Overture' is a prelude for 12 car horns. Three players operate four horns each by using their hands and feet according to the precise notation. As endless as the possibilities to perform this curiosity with the help of our separate edition may seem, as great is its entertainment value.
