Gade Copenhagen Niels W. Gade is one of the leading Danish composers of the nineteenth century. However only about half of his prolific ?uvre has appeared in print. Given this fact and the growing current interest in Gade there is an urgent need for a scholarly-critical Urtext edition of his music to meet the demands of both scholars and performers. This edition will contain all of Gade's completed compositions and separate movements as well as the arrangements he madeof his own works and those of other composers. In general the main text presents the ?definitive? version based on Gade's personal copy of the printed work. However all the remaining sources have also been consulted for purposes of comparison. Every editorial decision is mentioned and justified in the critical report (English). Gade's interest in choral music spanned his entire career. This volume presents more than 40 of his shorter works for mixed chorus both without and with accompaniment (piano organ harmonium or in one case brass ensemble). They occupy a no less prominent place in his oeuvre than his large-scale choral works with orchestra. Written between 1839 and 1885 they were intended for many different areas of application: songs for school chorus stand alongside liturgical music pièces d'occasion chorales and freely composed works for amateur choirs. The best-known are his Five Songs (op. 13) on poems by Emmanuel Geibel and Ludwig Tieck and the motet O du der du die Liebe bist both composed in Leipzig in 1846.

Ballad On Danish Folk Legends-With ?Elverskud? (?The Erl-Kings Daughter?) Gade presented his second ?secular cantata for soloists choir and orchestra? the first having been his successful ?Comala? Op. 12 (1845/46). The genre was quite popular among his contemporaries. This time Gade planned to base the work on the text of a folk song. Originally he had approached Hans Christian Andersen for a text but a collaboration did not materialize. The text Gade ultimately chose for his music was that of a ballad most likely penned by Emil Erslev and Gade himself. A German translation by Edmund Lobedanz was added at a later time.The composition started in 1851 and finished in March of 1854 soon became aninternational success and one of Gade?s most-performed works. In 1864 the composer made a number of changes to the instrumentation. While the new version was subsequently used for all performances conducted by Gade the changes were never incorporated into the printed edition of the score. This edition is the first to present this 1864 version.

Par GADE JACOB. Jalousie is a tango written by Danish composer Jacob Gade in 1925, originally scored for full orchestra. It soon became popular around the world and is today a classic in the modern repertoire, including many arrangements for various instruments and ensembles. This publication is the first for clarinet and piano, arranged by Paula Corley, former Pedagogy Chair for the International Clarinet Association, with piano accompaniment edited by Stephanie Bruning. The work consists of two themes the first a temperamental theme in D minor, followed by a lyrical section in D major, both with a typical tango rhythm. It became Gade\'s most popular and successful work, enjoying numerous radio broadcasts and recordings. Gade wrote these five a cappella choral pieces in the 1840s, during his years in Leipzig, when he was studying with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, to whom he felt a lifelong bond. The pieces are homophonic, clearly worked out movements with modest chromaticism. All five pieces are based on the romantic nature poetry of Emanuel Geibel, who was a representative in his time of the widely known “Munich School of Poets. ” The themes are: spring, autumn, morning mood, water lilies and wandering through the forest./ Répertoire / Choeur Mixte

Dramatic Poem. Par GADE NIELS WILHELM. 'Kalanus”, a 'dramatic poem for soloists, choir and orchestra” op. 48 was composed between June 1867 and March 1869 and is based on a text by Carl Andersen. A historical event during Alexander the Great's Indian campaign (326 AD) serves as the origin of the material: Alexander met Indian philosopher Kaljana, referred to as Kalanos in ancient sources. Gade had originally intended to unite the composition with 'Korsfarerne” (The Crusaders) (1866), and another work with Jewish-historical content in 'a type of trilogy”, however, he later abandoned his plan and 'Kalanus” remained in its singular form. The reception of the work was predominantly positive in regard to the music, while form and subject received a somewhat reserved response./ Répertoire / Orchestre

clarinet part in B flat-Along with Robert Schumann?s identically titled op. 73 the Fantasiestücke of 1864 by the Danish composer Niels Wilhelm Gade are an essential part of the repertoire of all clarinettists. Gade lived in Leipzig for a long time andhad been among Schumann?s close friends. With this deeply romantic composition he made an important contribution to establishing the clarinet as a chamber-music soloist. The four pieces in this collection can of course beperformed separately and are ideal teaching material. Our editor the clarinettist Nicolai Pfeffer has drawn upon the German and Danish first editions and the autograph in Copenhagen as sources and consequently has been able toeliminate several discrepancies found in older editions.
