Even in the earliest of these sonatas Schubert demonstrates his compositional poeticism sensitivity and skill inthe romantic idiom. For a broad scope of emotion and feeling they are second only to Beethovenâ??s sonatas.

In addition to his symphonies, Franz Schubert also wrote and handed down to posterity a total of eight finished concert overtures (two of them in two versions) between ca. 1811 and 1819. With the exception of the “Overture in D” (D 4) to the comedy “Der Teufel als Hydraulicus” (“The Devil as Engineer”) and the “Overture in D” (D 26), whose original title was cut out of the manuscript, they are all compositions which are associated neither with a drama nor a programme. They thus embody the type of the pure concert overture at an astonishingly early point in the history of music and are also in keeping with this terminologically by virtue of explicitly not having any other appellations whatsoever in the title: the epithet common for two works “in the Italian style” was only added posthumously. Our volume sees publication for the first time of the “Italian Overture in C” (D 591) in its two authentic versions, this being in contrast to the performance tradition based on a potpourri of the sources. The widely handed-down but corrupted musical course of the “Overture in D” (D 590) has likewise been rectified for the first time. Overshadowed by his symphonies, Schubert’s overtures have hitherto been largely undervalued both in their reception and in musical practice – including the “Overture in E minor” (D 648), which sees Schubert venturing into radically new spheres of expression to a greater extent than in virtually any other of his works./ Recueil / Orchestre

About Franz Schubert's opera 'Sakontala' During the autumn of 1820 Schubert started working on a large-scale romantic opera in three acts (and with partly spoken dialogue) for soloists choir and orchestra. The text was based on the classical poet Kalidasa’s drama 'Sakontala' and a friend of Schubert (professor ofphysics Johann Phillip Neumann) wrote the libretto. For unknown reasons Schubert never completed the opera. In the standard literature on Schubert this fragment is usually referred to as a minor totally incomplete torso. During the summer of 2001 the Finnish 'cultural entrepreneur' Antti Sairanen decided to investigate the possibility of 'rescuing' one of Schubert's numerous unfinished works for the stage by attempting to produce a performable version. Among his choices 'Sakontala' (because of the quality of the original Kalidasa text) became a preferred item. In the spring of 2002 he contacted me with this general idea and we decided to have a closer look at the Sakontala fragment. Sairanen managed to obtain a copy of the fragment from the international Schubert society in Tübingen. One of the ideas discussed was to attempt a 'rendering' of Schubert’s unfinished music combined with new music composed by me - accepting the inevitable stylistic 'clash' as a virtue. To my amazement however the 'fragment' proved to consist of more than 400 pages of unknown music by Schubert in his own hand. The fragment consisted of pages with 16 staves organised as an orchestral score. Schubert had fully written and composed the vocal parts with text. But only very rarely and sporadically did he write accompaniment hint at

Considering that the Mass in F major (D 105) was written from May to July 1814 and the Mass in C major (D 452) during June and July 1816 we can see that Schubert composed four of the six complete Mass settings which have survived from his hand within the short span of twoyears.The Mass was presumably first performed in Lichtental shortly after its completion. The fact that some partly autographic parts the organ part three soprano and three alto parts were made around 1820 seems to point to a second performance. And from Schubert’s brother Ferdinand we know that the Mass was performed a third time at the parish church in Hainburg at the beginning of October 1824 since Ferdinand played the organ on that occasion. Unlike most symphonies of that time, the symphony only consists of two movements, of which the Allegro moderato is the first movement. String Quartet in C-sharp minor op. 131. Many anecdotes surround String Quartet op. 131: Beethoven is said to have considered it to be his finest quartet and of his late period works, the one dearest to his heart. It is also believed that the composer invested so much of himself in it: his ailing health, the social isolation brought about by his deafness and the suicide attempt of his nephew Karl. In addition it was reported that Franz Schubert asked to hear this piece once more on his deathbed. Even if these anecdotes are not all true, they reveal what generations of musicians felt they heard in this quartet: Beethoven?s most personal musical idiom and a vulnerable message from the final period of his life. This new edition by Jonathan Del Mar represents a thorough revision of this highly complex work.
