According to Rautavaara it was a pity to leave the melancholy, moonlit songs of his opera Rasputin to languish within the confines of the opera. He therefore arranged the set of unabashedly sentimental and thoroughly melodic pieces, first for male choir, and in 2012 for mixed choir. Texts both in English and in Finnish.

'Humour plays a role, and my pieces are also an attempt to entertain people.' Words not often associated with contemporary music, but Wilhelm Killmayer wants to place fun and seriousness side by side. Different tonal spheres are found in the 'Impromptu' and the jaunty 'Scherzo lento' which uses tap tones for example. The 'Chorale' that follows allows the music to drift seamlessly into atonality. In the fourth romance 'Im Schumannschen Ton' ('The Schumann Sound'), a diatonic melody is complicated so much that the ending distorts to the beginning, 'just like man combines many different qualities'.In the concluding 'Capriccio', shifting time signatures and dynamic fluctuations are combined in a virtuoso manner. A humourous piece which demands the purest concentration from the players.

Beethoven wrote two Romances for violin and orchestra; his second one, the Op. 40 in G Major, was actually published in 1802, two years before the Op. 50 in F Major, even though the F Major Romance was composed four years earlier. The double stops of the violin solo are faithfully preserved in this arrangement, and careful attention to articulation and emphasis on melodic playing by every section of the band will make this piece an ideal choice to introduce the music of this master composer to young musicians.

Between 1890 and 1916 Sergei Rachmaninoff composed a total of eighty-five art songs. Often referred to as “romances,” most are settings of romantic poems, usually by Russian poets. Seventy-one of them were published under various opus numbers, but fourteen did not appear in print during his lifetime at all and bear no opus number. This volume is the first to present these songs in a German adaptation, along with the original Russian text.
