Songs from Across the Water was commissioned by Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds - Phil Evans, Founder and Director. Phil Evans hails from the UK and served for 25 years in the Band of HM Royal Marines. Now resident in the USA he founded Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds in 2008, giving them the tag line ‘An American Band with a British Accent’, as he wanted to combine the best of both countries’ band traditions. With this in mind, composer Philip Sparke decided to create a suite of British folk songs, scored with an American influence to fulfil the philosophy of the band’s tag line. The three movements, which are played without a break, are based on the following folk songs, which come from all corners of the British Isles: The Three Ravens & The Cruiskeen Lawn, The Lark in the Clear Air and The Piper o’ Dundee & Men of Harlech. Les troismouvements qui s’enchaînent reposent sur les trois chansons folkloriques suivantes, qui viennent de tous les coins des Îles Britanniques : The Three Ravens & The Cruiskeen Lawn, The Lark in the Clear Air et The Piper o’ Dundee & Men of Harlech.

The Folk Songs choral collection explores the musical world of Great Britain and Ireland. It contains 21 arrangements of English-language verse songs, canons, and ballads for mixed unaccompanied chorus. The folk songs are as diverse as the stories they tell: from the moving Greensleeves and Two hearts beat as one, through charming settings such as A rosebud by my early walk and There were three ravens, to saucy and tongue-in-cheek songs such as Dashing away with the smoothing iron and The mother-in-law. The stylistic treatment is very varied: the collection contains both original settings from the 13th century as well as arrangements specially commissioned from contemporary composers for the collection. The settings are in three to five parts, and the vocal parts sometimes divide. They are by well-known British and Irish composers such as Benjamin Britten, Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Charles Villiers Stanford, as well as contemporary composers such as John Rutter and Carsten Gerlitz - who give a new twist to these traditional songs. Calmus Ensemble has recorded six arrangements from this collection for their CD Folk Songs (Carus 83.034).

The story of The Bishop and the Pagan, drawn from musical documents and folklore, tells of the death of the British warrior and Christian missionary Bishop Henry at the hands of the Finnish peasant farmer Lalli in the winter of 1158. By a fortunate and unusual historical circumstance, the viewpoints of both sides have been preserved: a written Latin Gregorian chant The Sequence of Saint Henry documents the British Christian side, while numerous folk songs represent the event as seen by the Finnish pagan. (Text: The Sequence of St. Henry, in Latin, and ancient Finnish runic folk songs, in Finnish or English).
