Master guitarist Al Petteway ventures into new territory with 15 Celtic-inspired, traditional, and New Age fingerstyle compositions in standard and alternate tunings. Derived from Al??s award-winning solo recording of the same title, each piece bears the inimitable Petteway signature of profoundly graceful, inspired innovation. Written in standard notation and tab with several pieces in alternate tunings. Al began his professional music career at the age of 11. He played guitar, drums, and string bass with a variety of rock and folk acts in the Washington D.C. area during the 60??s, becoming a local legend by the time he went to college to study music composition in 1970. In 1977, Al took a job with The National Geographic Society. His work as Supervisor of Picture Editing for the society??s Image Collection, gave him the artistic freedom to develop his own acoustic guitar style. While long recognized as one of the country??s foremost bluegrass and folk sidemen, Celtic music specialty label Maggie??s Music signed Al in 1993 and released Whispering Stones following by The Waters and the Wild-exposing his solo acoustic guitar work to an international audience for the first time. Al left the National Geographic to become a full-time musician in the spring of 1995, just before the release of Midsummer Moon.

Inspired by an exhibition of historic Peruvian art, Kingdom of the Sun and Moon takes us on a mythical journey reflecting the ancient Inca Empire. This imaginary movie score uses modal melodies, exotic percussion and dramatic orchestration to create an epic music experience. In cinematic style, this work opens with a panoramic picture of the great Inca city of Machu Picchu and ends with a colorful procession towards the Temple of the Sun. Though written for young band, Kingdom of the Sun and Moon's effective scoring gives it the sophisticated sound and intensity of a much more advanced piece. Dur: 3:20.

Simon Holt 's the man in the wind and the west moon was composed for Solo Harp in 2013, having been commissioned by The Tanza Trust. The piece takes its title from a line in a Dylan Thomas poem named 'And death shall have no dominion'. The four sections of the work see shifting harmonies throughout, with the first section repeating but also changing ever so subtly. The unique thing about the piece is that each section is dynamically different, but is left open to interpretation by the player. The man in the wind and the west moon was first performed on the 2nd of June 2014 at Milton Court Concert Hall in London by Alex Rider. The piece lasts around 7minutes, and the bottom C and D strings should be tuned to C# and D# respectively.

Drawing inspiration from the haunting beauty of the ring of mist that sometimes surrounds the moon (known as “lunar halo”) and also the legends and folklore associated with this phenomenon, Richard has created a masterful work for the concert stage. Into Moonlight's Mist opens quietly with transparent colors, then gradually builds and evolves throughout by adding layers of tonal richness and rhythmic intensity. Dur: 4:30.

Within much of her work,Judith Weir has tried to portray the sky, stars and planets in her music and the Moon and Star follows the same path. This work based on poetry by Emily Dickinson uses the text to act as a philisophical motto to the music itself, choral voices are used a source of textual richness and produce wide, harmonic paragraphs. The orchestra is used to display musical height and distance with a mix of triple woodwind, 4 trumpets and high violins. The composition is 15 minutes long. Work for SSAATTBB Choir and Orchestra. Commissioned by the BBC Promenade Concerts, and premiered by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Singers in August 1995.

Amber moons are beautiful and rare full moons, created when the sun is high in the sky and directly opposite the moon. Amber Moon begins with an opening fanfare, then moves into the first theme based on this fanfare. A second statement of the theme is repeated softly, followed by a lyrical secondary theme in the woodwinds. Variations follow this statement, and cyclically, like the comings and goings of the Moon and Sun, the piece concludes with a return to the initial theme.Amber moons are very beautiful and rare full moons, created when the sun is high in the sky and directly opposite the moon. They appear unusually large and low on the horizon with a deep, rich honey color and are believed to be signs of blessing and good luck. Amber Moon begins with an opening fanfare, then moves into a first theme based on this fanfare. A second statement of the theme is repeated softly, followed by lyrical second theme in the woodwinds. Variations follow this statement and a return to theme one concludes the piece.I enjoyed writing this piece and hope your students will enjoy playing these contrasting styles and that you will find the piece beneficial in teaching important musical concepts.Peter Terry, 2018.
