Allegretto for flute and piano by Jozef Swider is a work of a great artistic value that comprises a perfect didactic material, filling a gap in the Polish flute literature. Allegretto for flute and piano is a one-part composition of an ABA1 structure with a cadenza. A four-bar piano introduction developsinto the flute part intoning a dance and folk-style melody, which becomes fragmented in terms of rhythm and densified in its facture. The dialogue between the flute and the piano involves mutual motif complementation. The melody gathers momentum (numerous ascending and descending progressions, undulations, typical ties, trills), a dynamic gradation develops into the middle, more peaceful and cantilena-style, part. The culmination, initially outlined by the flute and continued by the piano, leads to the cadenza characterised by considerable performative freedom across motifs in parts A and B, exhibiting the colour and sound values ofthe instrument. The link A1 comprises a quasi-variation development of the first passage of the work; it is the most dynamic, energetic and diversified in terms of the applied sound registers (characteristic alloctava marking), articulation and agogics. Themarking piu vivo in bar 136, combined with irregular metric divisions and shifts in accents, intensified dynamics and expression adds spontaneity, ultimately leading to the work's finale. The application of the minor mode, the economy of expressive means and a changeable course of narration reflect introvert characteristics of the composer a man of outstanding humbleness and modesty, at the same time full of unrest, self-criticism and little faith towards himself, which is confirmed by recently found notes of his.

The 'Divertimento giocoso' by Harald Genzmer created in 1960 is scored for two woodwind instruments (flutes, recorders or transverse flute and oboe) as solo instruments opposed to the string orchestra. The composer, whose work suits the amateur music-making very much in many respects, succeeded in creating a tonal arrangement that is individual in style. In the first movement, this rhythmically very lively, thematically clearly visible and harmonically inter-esting though not revolutionary work presents the strings and the solo instruments often enter-ing canonically with an easily remembered -seventh motif; in the second movement, it leads a melody dying away a long time to a dynamic climax, adds harmonic cross relations to a scherzo moving in dance style and closes with a lively vivace movement. The first instrumental compositions Boismortier published were sonatas for two transverse flutes without bass, of which he wrote eight sets. They document both his development as a composer and the early evolution of the genre itself. The Six Sonates pour II Flutes traversieres Sans Baße Op. 47 (1733) — his last surviving set of such works — are ostensibly in the ‘Italian’ style. The dance-heavy format of the earlier ‘French’ sonatas has been abandoned, and structurally they reflect the influence of Telemann’s Sonates sans Basse à deux Flutes traveres [sic] (the second of their four movements is always a fugue). Set in tonalities comfortable for the baroque flute, these virtually unknown duets are expertly written for the one-keyed instrument and are richly rewarding to perform.

While one tends to associate the trio sonata for two violins and continuo with Italy, the trio sonata for flute, violin and continuo was largely the province of German composers (including Telemann, J.S. Bach, Handel, and then later Quantz, C.Ph.E. Bach, C.H. Graun and other musicians attached to the court of Frederick the Great). It is therefore surprising to discover that one of the very first collections of trio sonatas for this particular scoring was composed by the Frenchman Joseph Bodin de Boismortier (1689-1755), whose sonatas were moreover intentionally written in the ‘Italian style’.

This work for flute trio is in no way connected to the famous work of the same name by Antonio Vivaldi. In his Four Seasons, Mario Valsania sees the changing seasons from a child's point of view: Spring, out in the fresh air on abike ride, the unhurried Summer, Autumn and the new school year, and finally Winter, with its Christmas celebrations...This is a composition in a classical style but with advanced, non-traditional harmonies. The composer's aim was to bring out the full richness of the flute's range and character - such as staccato and double-tonguing. InWinter, various traditional Christmas carols can be heard.

“English Horn (or flute or clarinet or alto), Violin & Cello Rarely has a musical work been better characterized by its subtitle than Nicolas Bacri's Lyric Interlude: 'A Study in Pastoral Style'. When, in 2008, the composer received the commission for a piece with English horn from Cecilia Benner, patron of the Chamber Music Society of Detroit, he immediately thought of the duo between this instrument and the oboe that Berlioz, in the Symphonie fantastique, placed at the beginning of the 'Scène aux champs', making suddenly appear a nocturnal country landscape where two shepherds carry on a dialogue on their pipes. First performed in March 2009 at one of the Scarab Club Concerts in Detroit, the Lyric Interlude for English horn, violin and cello (Op.110a) nonetheless proclaims another tradition: that of British pastoralism, illustrated by the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), the 50th anniversary of his death having just been celebrated. This score pays him homage of rare sensitivity: set off by refined counterpoint, the undulating lament of the beginning, rhythmically supple, evokes the waving wheat, as does Vaughan Williams in the opening undulation of his Symphony No.3. The lyrical effusion, briefly interrupted by a scherzo in 6/8, again pours out, making the work evolve towards a slow, ecstatic atmosphere, close to the last of the English composer's Three Preludes on Welsh Hymn Tunes. Far from bucolic, postcard clichés and servile imitation, this Lyric Interlude opens the doors to a realm where pure beauty reigns. The composer also wrote another version of this work for English horn (or flute, clarinet, or viola) and piano, Op.110b (AL 30 750)&rdquo.
