With the songs Reger wrote between summer 1889 and spring 1901, he made his mark in the music world. His style displayed a harmonic and melodic intransigence which challenged, fascinated, and irritated performers and audiences in equal measure. The song collections which Reger compiled became ever more extensive: opp. 35 and 37 contained six and five songs, opp. 43 and 48 eight and seven, and opp. 51 and 55 twelve and fifteen songs. As well as this, he wrote some individual pieces for inclusion in the Neue Musik-Zeitung (WoO VII/23-29).In his assiduous search for texts, Reger turned to contemporary lyric poetry with its plurality of styles. The poems which he set were by representatives of the literary Jugendstil (art nouveau) and impressionist movements, including Otto Julius Bierbaum, Detlev von Liliencron, and Richard Dehmel. Here, Reger's musical hallmarks were intensity and subtlety of feeling, a desire for intimacy, and a modern emotional language. This corresponded with the concentration on the modern declamatory song following on from Hugo Wolf, to whom op. 51 is dedicated. In addition, Reger ventured to set texts which Richard Strauss had also set previously, in the process finding different solutions in mood and tonal language.
In January 2008 the Max-Reger-Institut (MRI) in Karlsruhe began publishing a scholarly-critical edition of the works of Reger (RWA). This is supported by the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature, and as a Hybrid Edition is exploring new approaches in editorial techniques.
For the first time, in this edition the digital component for this volume will no longer be supplied on a data storage device, but published in an online portal.

For several years, Tio, The Little Keyboard Man , has been looking over the shoulders of younger and older piano beginners as hero and helper. Used to complement schoolwork, the little Tio pieces help to recreate and deepen what has been learned in other contexts. Whether now as a single player or paired as a duet, whether relaxed at Christmas or bold in an expanded tonal space - Tio is always on the spot and has packed the appropriate music. After five volumes, a sixth and final volume will complete the piano series. A Goodbye Song For the sixth and closing volume of her Tio series, the piano pedagogue and artist Kerstin Strecke has compiled a selection of German and European children's songs. Presented primarily as supplementary literature from the first piano lesson, the volume even includes several pieces in two levels of difficulty and for four-hand playing. Song texts are given in German or in their original language and freely translated into German. A table of contents of the songs, in English, can be found at the end of the volume, lovingly illustrated by the author herself. Small, interspersed additional assignments also support a first understanding of music theory in the young keyboard artists.

The standard hymn-text edition of Seasonal Missalette maintained the original lyrics of a small number of songs in each seasonal issue. Due to significant declines in circulation, we have had to make the difficult decision to replace standard hymn text subscriptions with the revised text edition subscriptions, beginning with the Advent 2021 issue. For customers who would like to continue using the standard hymn texts, we have created a free supplemental pew book called 55 Catholic Hymns & Songs. This book contains the original hymn texts of the fifty-five hymns and songs as found in the standard hymn-text version of Seasonal Missalette. Download a copy of the index here.

In her song-set for baritone and piano A Swift Radiant Morning, Rhian Samuel, a noted contemporary composer of English song, has created a portrait in words and music of the young poet Charles Hamilton Sorley (1895-1915). Robert Graves described Sorley's death - at the Battle of Loos - as among the three most significant amongst poets in the First World War (the others being Wilfred Owen and Isaac Rosenberg). The five songs are 'Rooks', 'The Sounds of War', 'The Signpost', 'In Memoriam', and 'Earth's King'. The composer offers in the last song a celebration of Sorley's life, and a testament to his enduring legacy. A Swift Radiant Morning was commissioned by the Three Choirs Festival, Hereford, 2015, for a first performance by Roderick Williams, baritone, and Susie Allan, piano, at Holy Trinity Church, Hereford, on 25 July 2015. CONTENTS 1 Rooks 2 The Sounds of War 3 The Signpost 4 In Memoriam 5 Earth's King.

Byrd himself described his last publication, Psalmes, Songs and Sonnets of 1611 as his ultimum vale. Nonetheless, some of the music was written earlier, and compiled or adapted to complete this collection of 32 pieces in three, four, five and six parts. Five of the 3-part pieces are settings of texts from the first English emblem book, Geoffrey Whitney's A Choice of Emblems of 1586. Facsimiles of the relevant pages from Whitney are included.

Music for unaccompanied choir features very little in the works of the violin virtuoso and composer Louis Spohr (1784-1859), although he used the chorus to great effect, particularly in his early Romantic operas. Now, Clytus Gottwald has transcribed three of Spohr's songs with piano accompaniment for five-part mixed choir. The texts are by Goethe, Amalia Schoppe, and Uhland. Spohr's music, stylistically typical of a period of musical transition with its indefinable qualities, offers in a special way starting points for Gottwald's technique of arranging, influenced as it is by contemporary music. Gottwald's transcriptions of songs and instrumental works for vocal ensemble, distinguished by their highly sophisticated sound, have become firmly established in choral repertoire throughout the world in recent years.

Farewell MusicWith the Ernste Gesaenge (Serious Songs) for baritone and string orchestra Hanns Eisler created at the end of his life a key work whose complex message becomes more than clear from the music settings of texts by five different poets, together with the Holderlin motto articulated in the prologue. It reflects - between resignation and hope - the difficult current state of societal development. At the same time, not least by harking back to earlier works, it is a kind of quintessence of his composing. The piano arrangement of the subtle orchestral accompaniment is intended not only as a study aid for singers, but also as a work for public performance.
