Debussy's Premiere Rhapsodie is one of two concertante works completed, premiered and published during his lifetime. He was commissioned to write it in 1909 for the final examination at the Paris Conservatoire in 1910. Debussy orchestrated it in the summer of 1911. While transferring the clarinet part from the already published version for clarinet and piano, he made a few subtle changes, particularly in m. 201, which has been a bone of contention among clarinettists for over a century. The present scholarly-critical publication is the first Urtext edition of the orchestral version. It draws on every known source and takes into account a previously ignored source that sheds new light on the piece.

Hungarian Rhapsody N° 2 is the second in a set of 19 Hungarian Rhapsodies by composer Franz Liszt, and is by far the most famous of the set. Few other piano solos have achieved such widespread popularity, offering the pianist the opportunity to reveal exceptional skill as a virtuoso while providing an immediate and irresistible musical appeal for the listener. Both the original piano solo form and the orchestrated version of this composition have found widespread use in animated cartoons. Its themes have also served as the basis of several popular songs.Composed in 1847 and dedicated to Count László Teleki, Hungarian Rhapsody N° 2 was first published as a pianosolo in 1851. Its immediate success and popularity on the concert stage soon led to an orchestrated version, arranged by the composer in collaboration with Franz Doppler. The Japanese composer Tohru Takahashi has made a splendid transcription of this great music for clarinet choir. A wonderful piece of music for an advanced ensemble!

The Banks of Green Willow begins in pastorale mode with the title tune established in the Strings with solo clarinet. The work builds to quite a passionate climax before re-establishing the pastorale mood of the opening. Thesong on which the story is based has a tragic death at its centre, which is reflected in the score.English composer and folksong collector George Butterworth, who lived at the turn of the last century and lost his life in theFirst World War, is known for his settings of selections of A E Housman’s A Shropshire Lad and for an Orchestral rhapsody he composed on the same theme. As a Recorder of folksongs, he was successful in noting more thanthreehundred, mainly from Sussex. Johannes Brahms's Alto Rhapsody is published here in a new Urtext edition, modernised for present-day performance practice. It is based on the 2nd impression of the first printed edition, as this is regarded as the authentic musical text following the last revisions made by the composer. The musical setting of Goethe's poem Harzreise im Winter opens with a somber beginning, then by turning to divine powers, it arrives at a hopeful new level. The work - which was composed in connection with the marriage of Julie, the daughter of Brahms's revered Clara Schumann, in 1869 - impresses above all with its personal touch as well as its pioneering progressive harmonies and enormous compositional power, which still entice listeners into the concert hall. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.1039700.
