The following notes were prepared by Alan Hollander, former Edgemont High School Band Director: The opening fanfare leads to a lively English Country melody reminiscent of the writing of the English composer Gustav Holst. This theme is announced by the horns with subsequent solos by the oboe, trumpet and clarinet. The mood is light and airy; I remember my students humming and whistling the theme after our rehearsals. The short legato bridge leads back to the opening fanfare and a rousing conclusion. Edgemont Festival Overture was performed at a district festival with over 300 students, grades 5 through 12. Although the technical requirements were in the wheelhouse for the average high school band, one of the hidden assets is the accessibility of the inner parts, making it possible for the younger players to participate. Mr. Hollander has been an active oboist, conductor, and educator for over forty years. As a conductor, he has directed the American Wind Ensemble, the Westchester, NY Pops Band, the Larchmont Summer Symphony and as music director/conductor of the Westchester Band, one of the longest running community bands in New York State. He has taught in the public school systems of Hempstead and Scarsdale, New York, and at Hofstra University. A very exciting and contemporary work that is descriptive of the tragedy that occurred in Central America in 1541 when a long quiet volcano that had filled with water suddenly erupted, sending mud and water covering the city of Ciudad Vieja killing many and completely wiping out the city. The name of that volcano was Agua, which on that day brought whelm on to everything that its waters touched. This is the second published work by young composer Cory McBride and was written when he was a 16 year old high school student. Bold, unique and distinctive, includes solos for flute, tenor sax, bari sax & horn and it’s an excellent programming choice for any festival or concert performance by better bands.

The recital was performed by the three piccoloists from the Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras: Rosamund Plummer (SSO), Andrew Macleod (MSO), and me (ASO).When searching for a final piece that we could all play together as a trio, I came up a little short. Who would have guessed there would be so little repertoire for three piccolos? Thus the idea for Piccolo Ridicolo was born – a celebratory and humorous collaboration for three piccolos, with much debt and apologies owed to Rossini, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and more.Thank you Andrew and Rose for being my first guinea pigs, my ASO flute colleagues for various road tests, my sister Maria Grenfell for her initial typesetting, and my mentor Leone Buyse for encouraging me to seek publication of the piece.
