Besides containing bowing marks and fingering they also show how L?onard executed shifts of position and where he employed open strings. Furthermore modifications made to dynamic markings and additional legato bowing are shown.It is safe to assume that all of this was done with Mendelssohn’s approval. That the young violinist made a positive impression on the composer is confirmed in the latter’s correspondence following their joint performance. On July 30 1838 Mendelssohn wrote to Ferdinand David his concertmaster at Leipzig telling him that he would like to write a Violin Concerto for him: One in E minor goes through my head and the beginning will not leave me in peace. This Violin Concerto is now a pillar of the Violin repertoire and is commonly known as the Mendelssohn Concerto.

In the 1970s the renowned Russian violinists Igor and David Oistrach undertook the editing of major violin concertos. They concentrated themselves on works for violin and piano and drew upon their vast experience to provide a wealth of markings especially in the solo part.

The handbell arranger accomplished this through added more bells and increasingthe dynamic.
