35 pieces on the quirky side Instrument : piano Nombre de Pages : 56 Fascinations is a volume of quirky juxtapositions and intriguing pieces of music. Lœillet is cheek-by-jowl with Liszt, Schumann with Scarlatti and Sjögren. There are some fine newly-written miniatures, but also some extraordinary pieces by well-known composers, such as Mozart’s bizarre Funeral march of Signor Maestro Contrapunto or the unsophisticated music-making faithfully represented in Gounod’s Bagpipers and Tchaikovsky’s The peasant plays the mouth-organ. Dance movements by Telemann, Schubert, Rameau, Jiŕovec and Zilcher all have something unexpected or piquant about them, although they are technically straightforward and a joy to play. For intermediate-level pianists. Piano Moods is an exciting new piano series from Boosey & Hawkes. Each volume is devoted to a particular mood. The pieces chosen draw on Boosey & Hawkes' extensive collection of wonderful music as well as lesser-known gems from the past - some of them from surprising sources - and newly composed works. The Five Piano Pieces op. 23 are a transitional work in which Schönberg made the decisive step from free atonal music to composition based on tone rows, which however did not yet necessarily have to contain all twelve chromatic tones. Begun in 1920 as a contribution to a memorial album for Debussy, the cycle was completed – now as an independent work – only in 1923. The most famous piece in it is certainly no. 5, “Waltzâ€, an ironic playing with genre traditions that at the same time is a swift-moving piece of music! Our editor, Ulrich Krämer, is one of the most distinguished Schönberg scholars, while the fingerings are provided by specialist Shai Wosner. The clear and neatly set score is an ideal basis on which to explore this fascinating piano universe.
