Other members of the orchestra take over this rhythm section, including violas (and optional violin 3), stomping and clapping as the hoedown begins to roar. As is characteristic of much fiddle music, Hey Fiddle Fiddle! is based mostly on open 4ths and 5ths. These intervals become the focus of the piece at measure 49, where violins and violas trade phrases back and forth with low strings. One final build brings the tune back for a stirring conclusion. 2nd version: Arrangement for Soli SS and upper strings 2 Vl, Va, Vc, Cb) Among his compositions, Franz Lachner, the long-serving Music Director of the Court of Munich and Director of the Royal Choir, left behind a considerable number of sacred works, including two settings of the Stabat Mater. The first Stabat Mater, op. 154, from 1856 was limited to a purely vocal ensemble (CV 70.037); the second, op. 168, from 1870 included strings and organ, in which the darker timbre was achieved through the absence of the violins. In its harmonic expression the second composition is especially oriented towards the, at that time, modern style of the North German School centred around Liszt and Wagner, but without ever exceeding a moderate degree of technical difficulty in the voice parts. This piece was written as an introduction to the key of D minor and to the low second finger in the upper strings. Hopefully your students will enjoy the dark melody and feel the frenzy of the driving eighth notes, especially in the lower strings. The orchestra passes through the eye of the storm in mm. 17-39, but tension builds again in m. 40 as the original melody returns for a stormy finish!
