Tallis's choral works with English texts were all written for the worship of God in the reformed Church of England, setting either the liturgy of the new Book of Common Prayer of 1549, or Coverdale's vernacular bible. They testify to his position, undisputed even in his lifetime, as 'the father of English church music'. This volume contains ten of the 11 anthems that can definitely be attributed to the composer, and five contrafacta anthems with Latin texts, which were published in Tallis and Byrd's Cantiones Sacrae of 1575.

Robert Ramsay was organist of Trinity College, Cambridge. He left a 4-part service worthy of Orlando Gibbons, eight anthems of 5 and 6 parts, (including an impressive setting of When David heard that Absalon was slain which approaches the style of the Restoration full anthem), and a remarkable dialogue, In guilty night, setting a paraphrase of I Samuel 28, 8-20.

These four splendid anthems were composed for the coronation of George II in October 1727 and have since retained a position at the heart of the English choral tradition. The popular anthem Zadok the Priest has been performed at all subsequent coronations, and Handel's other contributions to the royal occasion - Let thy hand be strengthened, The King shall rejoice, and My heart is inditing - have the same majestic grandeur, with affecting contrasts between different sections of the sacred texts. The editor, Clifford Bartlett, has corrected various inconsistencies in Handel's score, and complete details of sources and editorial method, additional performance notes, and a critical commentary are included.

The choral tradition of British cathedrals and universities is world famous. Over the centuries, an immense trove of musical treasures came into being on the British Isles: euphonious choral settings which, in the meantime, have become increasingly popular on the European continent. The figuralchor koln conducted by Richard Mailander has recorded some of the most beautiful motets and anthems in the original language. The settings by notable composers such as Thomas Tallis, William Byrd and Charles Villiers Stanford provide a comprehensive overview of the long tradition of English sacred choral music from the 16th to the 19th century.
