This method is based on melodies original to the Mexican culture. These children's songs flow more naturally with the language, and in accord with the Kodály method of music education, give a better foundation for teaching basic musical elements in a Spanish language culture. Coupled with constant work on sight-reading, this new method is a valuable tool for native Spanish speakers in learning to play the piano, and will serve as a helpful and interesting supplement to English speaking students. Six Country Dances is an anthology of tunes from Playford’s ‘The English Dancing Master’ selected and arranged by Richard Rodney Bennett. Playford’s collection was first published in 1651 and contained 535 popular tunes for country dancing. Richard Rodney Bennett’s skilful and inspired arrangements are perfect for intermediate standard players adding as they do a contemporary slant to these classics of the English folk repertoire. This edition is for Viola and Piano.

While living in Mexico Janet Johnson taught Piano and music education at the Mexican Baptist Seminary from 1984 until 2000. She soon found that her Mexican students did not relate to the folk tunes found in translatedPiano methods. Janet wrote this new method which uses many children’s and folk melodies original to the Mexican culture. Even though several of the melodies in the first level book are not currently used orwell-known these songs provide a better foundation for teaching basic musical elements in any Spanish language culture. In order to capture the flow of the music more completely the sequence of the introduction of someelements varies somewhat from traditional methods. For instance eighth notes are taught much earlier than is customary so that the songs can flow with more authenticity. This material has been used successfully as a teaching toolat the Mexican Baptist Seminary and throughout Mexico since 1994.

It is a history compiled with deeper feeling and more understanding than can be found among the dates and data of thegreatest historian...'(Percy Grainger 1922)In 1905 Joseph Taylor won a Lincolnshire folksong competition with his rendition of Brigg Fair a song he had learnt from a gypsy. Australian composer Percy Graingersubsequently published a setting in his Lincolnshire Posy with Delius using the tune in his rhapsody Brigg Fair. Both composers sought to vivify the tradition of English folksong celebrating not only the ancient tunes and words but also the qualities of particular folksingers like Joseph Taylor.Harrison’s own Australian Heartoutbursts! follow unashamedly in the Grainger tradition with echoes of the original folktunes underpinning both songs Brigg Fair and The Seeds of Love. Although different in character both texts use similar images as analogies for the joys and despairing associated with love - the lark and violet symbolize youth the lily as virginity the red rose as true love and the willow representing falsehood and abandonment.

A 'rant' in the tradition of English folk music is an energetic dance and means 'to make merry' - a reflection of Jess's fearless and exuberant performances. RANT! draws on Cumbrian folk tunes sourced from Ed Heslam's unique folk music resource Music of Cumberland and Westmoreland, as well as several tunes composed by Ed himself.
