Joseph Campbell's poem The Emigrant presents us with the inside view of an emigrant who is going to leave his native land in a few hours and before this, has a farewell party with relatives and neighbors. The alternating feelings and suppressed sadness are reflected in Buchenberg's composition which skilfully oscillates between over-exaggerated boisterousness and despair.

Stanley Sadie’s opinion, expressed in 1963, that the two of the twelve trio sonatas by Frederick Ernest Fisher(1711/12–1760), divided equally between Op. 1 (c.1751) and Op. 2 (c.1761), were ‘among the finest of their time’ while some of the others were ‘remarkably inventive and original’ almost sells this composer short. Every single one of these works, scored for two violins, cello and harpsichord, is masterly and deserves a permanent place in the repertoire. Born in or near Kassel, Fisher spent several years in Holland, teaching music from 1741 to 1745 at the university of Leiden, before emigrating to England. After spending about two years in London he settled permanently in Cambridge, where he taught music to members of the local music society. His Op. 1 set, dedicated to the same society, epitomizes the ‘social’ character of the trio sonata genre, where individual virtuosity yields its place to amicable interaction between the players. Fisher was a cellist as well as a violinist, and this background is brought out by the rare eloquence of his bass lines. The diversity of movement types in these ordinarily three-movement sonatas is very attractive. They include powerful fugues, expansive movements in sonata form, languorous middle movements reminiscent of those in operatic overtures and a selection of dance movements, all of which mix baroque, galant and classical elements in a convincing synthesis.

After emigrating from Berlin at the age of 16, the Jewish composer Ursula Mamlok wrote Four German Songs in 1958 while studying at the Manhattan School of Music. Based on texts from Hermann Hesse's collection Vom Baum des Lebens, the songs reflect the uprooting from home. Mamlok juxtaposes Hesse's melancholy with an intensive tonal image which proceeds from expressionism with short motifs and tonal transgression, yet ventures into new spheres of expression.

Inventing the American Guitar is the first book to describe the early history of American guitar design in detail. It tells the story of how a European instrument was transformed into one with all of the design and construction features that define the iconic American flat-top guitar. This transformation happened within a mere 20 years, a remarkably brief period. The person who dominates this history is C. F. Martin Sr., America's first major guitar maker and the founder of the Martin Guitar Company, which continues to produce outstanding flat-top guitars today. After emigrating from his native Saxony to New York in 1833, Martin quickly established a guitar making business, producing instruments modeled after those of his mentor, Johann Stauffer of Vienna. By the time he moved his family and business to rural Pennsylvania in 1839, Martin had absorbed and integrated the influence of Spanish guitars he had seen and heard in New York. In Pennsylvania, he evolved further, inventing a uniquely American guitar that was fully developed before the outbreak of the Civil War. Inventing the American Guitar traces Martin's evolution as a craftsman and entrepreneur and explores the influences and experiments that led to his creation of the American guitar that is recognized and played around the world today. This edition includes three piano works by the German-Jewish composer Hans Samuel (1901-76), who was active primarily as an organist and composer of organ music. The selected works - Hassidic Hanukkah Tune: Al hanissim we al hapurkan (1946), Sounds of Slichoth: Paraphrases on S'lichoth Tunes According to the Ashkenas-Western Mode (1957, dedicated to the composer's parents, who perished in Theresienstadt), and Variations on a Yemenite Tune (undated) - were composed after Samuel's emigration to Palestine in 1939. Besides exemplifying the heightened awareness of diverse Jewish musical traditions that characterizes Samuel's music after his emigration, these works are representative of Israeli immigrant composers' early struggles to attempt to define their new nation musically.

Volume II of the collected edition of the choral works of Veress contains seven Hungarian folksong cycles or cantatas, a choral poem in Hungarian and a choral cycle in English. In his first creative period (1929-1939), which he spent in Hungary, Sándor Veress's direct involvement in Hungarian folk music research played a decisive part: his folksong experience gained through personal collecting work found expression in his first period of composition for mixed choir. In the course of the 1960s, after his emigration, he returned on two occasions to the a cappella mixed choir genre: in 1962 he wrote a piece for mixed choir to mark the 60th birthday of the great Hungarian poet GyulaIllyés (Óda Európához - Ode to Europe, based on the poem by Illyés), and in 1967, at the request of the Australian Radio Company, he composed for the 'Adelaide Singers' chamber choir Songs of the Seasons, a seven-movement madrigal cycle making exceptional demands on the performers, to verses by the Australian poet Christopher Brennan (1870-1932).

All in first position with straightforward rhythms and thematic parts for everyone, this poignant song arranged by Sandra Dackow will be a wonderful addition to any concert. The Girl I Left Behind Me first appears in 18th century Ireland, often known as Brighton Camp. It emigrated to the United States along with many other Anglo/Scots/Irish folk tunes and became a popular marching song for soldiers. During the American Civil War, soldiers in both the Confederate and Union armies sang it. A number of cultures have embraced this song, adding their own local lyrics. Ursula Mamlock, who emigrated from Germany in 1939, composed 2000 Notes, her most important work for piano solo, in New York. Here she studied and taught composition until she returned to her native city of Berlin in 2006. In 2015 Yu Fujiwara arranged 2000 Notes for three percussionists (xylophone, glockenspiel, vibraphone, and marimbaphone). Ursula Mamlok was unable to attend the world premiere in Basel in January 2016 but heard a performance in Villingen-Schwenningen on 12 April and, delighted with the new tone colours, authorized this arrangement. This is the last composition prior to her death in May 2016 which could be newly entered in her catalogue of works as an arrangement. Rich in contrast, this short, concise piece is typical of her style and a valuable addition to the canon of percussion works.

This edition of the Catalan folk songs is more complete and contains more works than in any other edition. It is particularly generously documented. There is also an illustrated 12 page chronology of Llobet's life with 61 rare photographs and documents. As in all our editions both a detailed documented critical commentary and copious notes are included. Catalan song also connects Llobet to the cultural restlessness of the epoch in which he was born and grew up, to the movement relating to the birth and definition of a Catalan cultural identity, which, when properly understood, was to reveal all the more fully Llobet's intellectual and above all his musical stature, before we came to consider him a great poet of the guitar as well.

Adolf Busch performed around the world both as a solo violinist and with his Busch Quartet, founded in 1912. In 1944 Busch emigrated to the U.S. where he met, at the occasion of a performance of Mozart's Clarinet Quintet, the Russian-born musician Simeon Bellison. Stimulated by his playing, Busch wrote the rousing Divertimento Op. 62b shortly thereafter. The humorous, entertaining character of the work in six movements relies on historical genre models. The fusing of the three distinctive sound colors is achieved in a special manner by Busch.
