Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg originally wrote Peer Gynt as the incidental music to Henrik Ibsen's 1867 play of the same name which premiered in 1876. Later in 1888 and 1891 Grieg extracted eightmovements to make two four-movement suites: Suite No. 1 Op. 46 (Morning The death of Ã?se Anitra's dance and In the hall of the mountain king) and Suite No. 2 Op. 55 (The abduction of the bride Arabiandance Peer Gynt's homecoming (stormy evening on the sea) and Solveig's song). Some of these movements have received coverage in popular culture and are thus well-recognised everywhere.This edition of the Peer GyntSuites is arranged for Grade 8 Piano solo.

88 Grieg arranged four pieces from his incidental music for Ibsen’s verse drama Peer Gynt to form an orchestral suite (Op. 46). This was followed in 1891 by a second orchestral suite (Op. 55) again comprising 4 pieces. Both suites quickly became established in the concert repertoire and contributed significantly to Grieg’s international fame. He made piano arrangements of both suites and published them simultaneously with the orchestral suites in 1888 and 1893. Grieg subsequently made further adjustments in the piano pieces: shortening some, for example ‘Morning’, and expanding others like ‘The Death of Åse’. Overall, Grieg reduces the dramatic orchestral conception in favour of a more intimate expression and more restrained effects. Ce n?est que quelques années plus tard qu?il adaptera le texte pour la scène. Il s?assure alors la collaboration d?Edvard Grieg qui composa les 23 tableaux de la musique de scène. James Curnow a rassemblé quatre des plus célèbres tableaux de la Suite pour Orchestre n° 1 : Au matin La mort d?Åse Danse d?Anitra et Dans lepalais du Roi de la montagne.

Version for Piano four-Hands-Grieg?s incidental music for Henrik Ibsen?s drama ?Peer Gynt? contains some of his best-known compositions such as ?Morning Mood? and ?In the hall of the Mountain King?.Grieg later extracted the most beautiful pieces to form two Orchestral suites and arranged himself these versions for Piano solo and Piano four-hands. There was a surprise in store for Henle when they werepreparing this Urtext edition. In the autograph and the first print run the second suite contained another movement the ?Dance of the Mountain King?s Daughter? which Grieg deleted shortly afterwards. Thischarming dance appears in the appendix to this edition printed again for the first time in 120 years! The Norwegian pianist and Grieg expert Einar Steen-Nøkleberg was co-editor for this edition and alsoprovided the new fingerings.

Grieg's 'Peer Gynt' Suites are among the most popular works in the orchestral repertoire. Every music lover is familiar with titles like 'Anitra's Dance' or 'Solvejg's Song'.
