Our selection here does not take things quite so solemnly because we have also taken the opportunity to show the more ?worldly? side ofthe composer with dances bagatelles the unusual character piece ?Lustig und traurig? (?Happy and sad?) and of course the indestructible ?Für Elise?. As usual in our series ?At the piano? all the pieces are arrangedprogressively from easy to medium level of difficulty. And you do not have to be in awe of Beethoven?s piano sonatas either: the highly Classical sonata in G major (essentially a sonatina) offers an ideal introduction to themany-facetted world of Beethoven?s sonatas. In contrast to this we also show Beethoven the ?poet at the piano? with the first movement of his ?Moonlight? Sonata in c-sharp minor along with the funeral march from the Sonata inA-flat major visionary creations that already point far ahead into the world of Romanticism.

Besides several easy individual movements ourvolume also includes two complete sonatas so that the performer can experience the broader dramatic trajectory of a multi-movement work. We further include some charming arrangements for piano that Haydn made of his own works such as the slow movement of his String Quartet op. 76 no. 3 whose theme is better known today as the German national anthem.

Leopold Koželuch (also Koželuh) was among the leading musical figures of 18th-century Vienna well-known in his day as an excellent pianist and piano teacher. Six delightful sonatas have been selected from the complete edition of his piano sonatas published by Bärenreiter â?? namely the easiest as this album is specifically aimed at beginner and moderately advanced pianists. The edition includes Piano Sonatas No. 37 in G major No. 47 in E-flat major No. 7 in D major No. 46 in C major No. 10 in F major and No. 14 in G major inviting pianists to explore the piano music of the Viennese Classic.

A successful mix of well-known and unusual pieces leads the player all the way to the profound Fantasy in d minor. A specialfeature here is the C-major study which has not been available in any Henle edition until now. Selected individual movements from Mozart’s piano sonatas show the stylistic and emotional breadth and subtlety of his music andoffer manifold opportunities to practise and overcome specific technical challenges.

Georg Benda was born on 30. Juni 1722 in Bohemia and 1997 was the 275. anniversary of his birth. He is the most celebrated member of the musical Benda family and besides works for the stage he wrote chiefly piano compositions. Zelter wrote to Goethe of Georg Benda: A true musician; I have never since met his like. The grade is similar to easy Haydn sonatas.
