In the last year of his life, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) composed the six charming Children's Pieces, op. 72 (EB 8317). In contrast to the collections of children's pieces (by Schumann or Reger, for example), these have remained relatively unknown. Admittedly, however, they here and there demand technical and musical accomplishments that are beyond those to be expexted of beginners and belong to an intermediate stage of instruction. In the present edition, minor re-arrangements and cuts (in op. 72 no. 6) are intended to make the music more accessible to a child's understanding. The Songs without Words presented here are musically more demanding. From the total of 48 pieces, I have selected three slow compositions in which simple, beautiful melodie lines are supported by chorale-like piano textures. True performance of these pieces requires clean polyphonic chord playing and a cultivated pedal technique. The selection of pieces in this edition will, it is hoped, stimulate renewed interest in the piano music of Mendelssohn, which is so neglected today. Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Spring 1979A Selection from 6 Children's Pieces (Op. 72) and Songs without Words.

This series of easy piano music for teaching purposes presents pupils in the lower and lower middle grades with a carefully chosen selection of well-known and lesserknown compositions by important masters. The volumes are deliberately kept small in extent, since it is more stimulating for children to change the teaching material frequently. When the aspiring pianist has dealt successfully with the works of Frederic Chopin for the first time, he will have left the elementary level of instruction behind. The following selection of easy pieces also requires security of technique and capability of musical expression in order to enable the florid sound of Chopin's piano music to unfold. As much as works like the Prelude in D flat major or the Walz in A minor may tempt one to premature endeavours, a study of Chopin's music should not be attempted too early. In the following five Preludes, the two Valses and the Nocturne in G minor (six Mazurkas have been published in a separate folio), the editor has made a selection of pieces, which can be mastered by the pupil (with the exception of opus 28/15 and opus 28/20), even if a limited facility and finger stretch is present. Because of the finger stretch required for some chords, a different distribution of the hands has been indicated or simplifications have been suggested. An introduction to the Tempo rubato, taking style into consideration, is a task lying within teacher's responsibility. Indications for pedal use were added by the editor. Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Fall 1979.

This series of easy piano pieces for teaching purposes presents pupils in the early and early-middle stages with a careful selection from well-known and less-known compositions by important masters. The individual volumes are deliberately kept small in extent, since it is more stimulating for children if the literature used for instruction is changed frequently. Of all Grieg's piano music, it is the Lyric Pieces (EB 8832) that enjoy the greatest popularity. These character pieces, which are very varied in their difficulty and their length, preoccupied the composer throughout his creative life. The easiest pieces from the first three books (op. 12, 38 and 43) have been chosen for the present volume. In the musical sense, however, they are by no means light-weight. Only someone who has made the art of playing expressively in the Romantic style his own with the help of Schumann's Scenes from childhood (EB 8436) will be able to interpret this poetry filled with the soul of nordic peoples appropriately. Interpretative indications have been partly added to; fingerings and the distribution of the music between the hands have, as far as possible, been adapted to smaller hands. Sensitive use of the pedal and a tempo rubato imbued with the sense of the music are prerequisites. Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Summer 1977.

The present series of easy piano music for teaching provides pupils in the lower and lower-middle grades with a careful selection of well-known and little-known compositions by important masters. Each book has intentionally been kept small in extent, since it is more stimulating for children to change the teaching material frequently. Mozart was in London with his parents and his sister from April 1764 to July 1765. As well as performing in concerts as a child prodigy, he composed works for various instruments and combinations. A sketch-book dating from this period (EB 3276, published in full by Georg Schunemann) contains more than 40 compositions, chiefly for piano (KV 15 a - 15 ss). The works published here have been chosen with regard to their musical and technical suitability for pupils in the lower grades. Obvious notational errors have been corrected; tempo indications and marks of expression have been supplied where necessary by the editor. In certain pieces, Mozart himself specified the performance indications (as, for example, in the case of the varying articulations in no. 9). Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Fall 1974.

The individual volumes are deliberately kept small in compass, since it is more stimulating for children if the literature used for instruction is changed frequently. Amongst the numerous piano works of the composer, pianist and music publisher Anton Diabelli there are some instructional works for piano duet (four hands at one piano) that have retained their freshness and value to this day as the Melodie Studies, op. 149. These attractive short pieces will still appeal to today's piano-playing young people. In the original version, the secondo part is designed for the teacher. In the present edition, this part has been rearranged in such a manner that it, too, lies within the capacities of the student. Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Fall 1974.
