Earth, Wind & Fire was formed by jazz drummer Maurice White, whose aim was to mix various music styles to produce a unique sound. Combined with excellent song writing and fine performances this sound made Earth, Wind & Fire one of the most influential soul groups of the seventies. In subsequent decades they experienced varying success but this medley reflects the heyday of this legendary group. In his job as staff arranger with the Royal Marine Band of the Dutch Navy, Peter Kleine Schaars wrote many top-class arrangements. The talent of the musicians in the band made it possible to write in such a way that they closely resembled the original works. Consequently, this medley shines just like the original versions by Earth, Wind & Fire. Four famous songs have been used: In the Stone, Got to Get You into My Life, After the Love Has Gone and September.

This riff-packed funk piece offers an exciting opportunity for students to explore the rhythms and sounds made famous by Sly and The Family Stone, James Brown, and Earth, Wind and Fire. A sample solo is provided, but fea- tured soloists should improvise their own solos using either an A-minor pentatonic scale (A, C, D, E, G, A) or an A-blues scale (A, C, D, D≥, E, G, A). While soloing, keep it simple and focus on creating short rhythmic riffs using two or three pitches, or choose a riff from the piece and embellish it. Drummers are encouraged to add to the written groove.

Rihards Dubra (born Latvia, 1964) wrote his piano concerto – Liepaja Concerto No. 3 – in 2012. A 33-minute work for solo piano and symphony orchestra comprising triple wind and brass, percussion, harp and strings, the concerto starts with a mournful piano melody. It has an elemental beauty – we hear water in the sonorities of harps and chime-bells, earth in the rhythmic formulae, and fire in his colourful harmonic sequences – ending with a majestic and vibrant conclusion.
