Uneven meter with light and staccato eighth note patterns set the stage for Twinkling stars. The singers sing of a longing to know and understand the far away and vast universe while clinging to the earth. Our imaginations are ignited by the music and the text and the hope that we might someday comprehend all that is possible.

In Book 3, Mary Leaf provides pieces that expand a pianist's concepts of rhythm and harmony. Students experience a solar eclipse with unusual harmonies, express an exotic melody at a caravanserai in the deserts of Africa, play a bit of the blues followed by a Baroque-styled piece, and convey a gorgeous cloudy day. Most of the nine pieces are 3 pages, and teachers will find this a very useful book-good teaching material.

Stratoscape, by Swiss composer Gauthier Dupertuis, is a colorful and contrasting work for wind orchestra, depicting the view of our earth as seen from the stratosphere. This voyage into the sky is pictural, but also metaphorical, as it is also about distancing from our world. The work is divided into five sections: I Ignition!, II Broadness & The Big Blue, III Stars Shining from Down to Above, IV Destructive Forces, V One and Only Home Five contrasting movements, starting with Ignition in which Gauthier Dupertuis tries to musically convey the majesty of our planet seeing if from the atmosphere, ending with One and Only Hope, as the title say, a message of hope. In between three movements that depict the broadness of the landscapes of our planet (second movement), the fragility of our earth at night with only the stars shining (third movement). But also sheer reality in the fourth movement when the composer translates into music the damage caused toour planet by us human beings. Stratoscape: a fantastic view of Planet Earth!

When Tim Sharp, Executive Director of the ACDA, offered Stucky the Brock Memorial Commission, it was decided that the text would commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, since the annual convention would take place in Dallas of that year. To that end, Stucky chose four different but pertinent texts to honor the occasion, although never referencing JFK by name. Take Him, Earth was premiered at the ACDA convention in March, 2013. Originally scored for chorus and chamber ensemble of nine instruments (available on a rental basis), Take Him, Earth is presented here in piano reduction. For advanced choirs. Duration: 13'.When Tim Sharp, Executive Director of the American Choral Directors Association, very kindlyoffered me the Raymond W. Brock Memorial Commission for 2013, he suggested that because thepremiere would take place at the national conference in Dallas in the 50th year since the assassinationof John F. Kennedy in that city, the text might refer in some way to that grim anniversary. Hesuggested, too, that I consider using a chamber ensemble or chamber orchestra to accompany thechorus.I took these suggestions to heart, but at the same time I wanted to write something universal enoughto be appropriate on other occasions, in other settings. Thus the score is dedicated to PresidentKennedy’s memory, but otherwise he is never referred to by name. Instead, I assembled a group oftexts that are associated with him in some way, but that also stand alone as a more general eulogy. As a refrain, there are a few lines from the early Christian burial hymn that begins “Take him,Earth, for cherishing†— lines that were earlier set to music by Herbert Howells in his classic motetcommissioned for Kennedy’s memorial service in 1963. The lines of Aeschylus “Drop, drop — inour sleep, upon the heart sorrow falls†from Agamemnon were quoted by Robert F. Kennedy uponthe death of Martin Luther King in April 1968. The celebrated “When he shall die, cut him out inlittle stars†from Act III of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was cited by RFK a few months after hisbrother’s murder.

The first time I saw an alpenglow, I had no idea what it was. It was the late 1980s, and I was at a music camp at the base of theRocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. A few of us got up in the middle of the night so we could hike to a vantage pointat the foot of Longs Peak, to watch the sun rise without any trees obstructing our view. Even though we had a few moreminutes to go before the sun breached the horizon, when I looked up at the face of Longs Peak, it was glowing intensely with amost beautiful peach-pink color. This enchanting vision lasted only about ten minutes, after which the color faded as the sunrose. Throughout the next thirty years, whenever I returned to the Rocky Mountain National Park, I would occasionally catchthis pre-dawn light show in all its glory. An alpenglow is an optical phenomenon that is visible on high altitude mountains. It happens twice daily, right before the sunrises and right after it sets. The earth’s atmosphere scatters the sun’s light, allowing particular wavelengths of light through andblanketing the mountains in rich hues of peach, pink, red, and purple.Alpenglow opens with First Light. This movement begins in the pre-dawn hour. The music starts simply and slowly, thengrows increasingly animated as the sky lightens and the horizon shimmers with color. The movement explodes in a massiveflurry of activity when the sun crosses the horizon; this energy eventually fades as the sun rises in the sky. In Arc of the Sun,we follow the sun as it energetically leaps and surges upwards in the sky. The music moves steadily upwards as it keeps pacewith the sun’s progress, then crests as the sun reaches its zenith. As the sun bends back down towards the earth, the musicfollows suit, getting lower in range and slower as the sun nears the horizon. In Radiant Glow, the sun slips under the horizon, giving way to a most radiant alpenglow. As the alpenglow fades and twilight envelops the earth, stars shimmer in the nightsky.-S.G.

When the stars burn down and the earth wears out...we will rise and all applaud! Singing blessing and honor and glory and power forever to our God! These words, penned by Jonathan Lee and Jennie Lee Riddle, are but a bit of the majestic lyrics found in this anthem about the Second Coming. Gary Rhodes' masterful arrangement for solo with choir will surely make this song a favorite.

Leokadiya Kashperova (1872–1940), hitherto consigned to a footnote in musical history as Stravinsky's piano teacher, is undergoing rediscovery. A double graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatoire, she emerged as a virtuoso pianist and composer in the romantic tradition. She was associated with some of the great musicians of her day, including Balakirev and Auer. She performed in both Germany and the UK in the 1900s, but her career petered out after 1920. Following her graduation from the St Petersburg Conservatoire Kashperova became personally acquainted with the poet Yakov Polonsky and often attended his literary gatherings. When he died in 1898 Kashperova responded by setting his enchanting and mystical 'legend' To a Child in Answer to the Question: Where Do the Stars Come From? The baritone soloist takes the role of the father or grandfather who endeavours to answer the riddle posed in the title. He decides to relate 'a tale of old, an Eastern legend' which recounts how, long ago, the flowers would weep, so afraid were they of the dark. In response an archangel (soprano solo) descends to Earth and is so moved by the flowers’ anguished appeal, she gathers 'all their tears in chalice gold / And bears them up to God in Heav'n above'. The baritone narrates the final scene as the Almighty casts the tears across the firmament, thus creating the constellations. The child’s question is answered, and the peaceful domesticity of the opening scene returns.

The journey into nature continues with this collection that engages the senses and allows students to experience the universe in an imaginative way. Every pianistic piece is rewarding and the styles are so varied: Sunshine in the Glen has a lush melody; Rockasaurus has a cool, rock beat; A Star for Finnian has a wee hint of Celtic flavor in G mixlolydian mode; Stirring Volcano is a sleeping volcano beginning to stir; The Rains of Autumn is Impressionistic and introspective; and you can see/feel the shimmering light bounce off the water in Sunset on the Lake. This is Mary Leaf at her best!
