Andalag # 2 - Duo for two Flutes (2011). Part of Andalag - Suite in 11 movements. Programme note Some years ago I was asked by the Faroese ensemble Aldubáran to compose duets for the woodwinds within the ensemble. The idea then came to me to write a Suite with the name “Andalag” in 11 movements. 8 movements are duets and are approximately 4 min. long. 2 movements are quartets and are approximately 8 min. long and 1 movement is an octet which is approximately 16 min. long. In other words the Suite will last approximately 60 min.   The (octet) instrumentation is 2 flutes 2 clarinets 2 horns and 2 bassoons. The Faroese word “andalag” has a multilayerd meaning. The first half of the word is “anda” and means to breath or spirit and the second half of the word “lag” means melodi mood or layer. I use two small ideas in this Suite. One idea is in a sort of major mood and the other in a sort of minor mood. Sunleif Rasmussen May 2013

Gregory Stone has transcribed these three selected preludes for one piano-four hands. For much of his life George Gershwin sought to integrate the worlds of jazz and classical music. These pieces are not jazz improvisations but they do show something of the style of his own playing. Gershwin had intended to compose a set of twelve a sort of jazz Wohltemperierte Clavier but his unexpected death from a brain tumour at the age of 38 prevented this. At least seven survive (others may have ended up as songs) and this set of three as published form a satisfying unit. The first opens with a blue-note riff which forms the basis of the first theme.Contrasting material follows making use of a distinctive repeated note figure then the first idea reappears in a quasi-orchestral climax. The second prelude shows a curious kinship with Chopin???s A minor Prelude with its eerie accompaniment and hypnotic melody. The third exploits a similar major/minor ambivalence but dextrous syncopation gives it driving rhythmic energy.

Par WIDOR CHARLES-MARIE. Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937) composed this Mass, Op. 36 in 1878 for the St Sulpice church in Paris. The initial two choirs for which it was composed were comprised of around 200 and 40 voices, while the score for this version is for a choir of baritones and an SATB choir. The Organ part requires an advanced-level of ability as it contains some difficult parts. Divided into five sections, the entire work has been transposed one half step lower ‘ to avoid the awkward key of F sharp major'. These sections are: 1. Kyrie (Moderato & F# minor) 2. Gloria (Vivace & Lento, D major 3. Sanctus (Con brio, A major) 4. Benedictus ( Piú lento, A major) 5. Agnus Dei (Moderato, F# major) This really delicate and emotive Mass, Op. 36 is a piece that stands out by its majesty. Charles-Marie Widor was a great organist who did not only focus on Organ composition.
