Par REGER MAX. Die Drei Chören (The Three Choirs) op. 6 are hardly mentioned in the young Reger's correspondence. The only meaningful reference is Reger's announcement to his London publisher George Augener on August 1, 1892: 'I will send the choruses op. 6 which your son liked very much to you tomorrow morning [...]'. George Augener had spent five weeks from undergoing treatment in Wiesbaden and had met on this occasion not only Hugo Riemann but also his 'favorite pupil' Reger. After the publication, the Allgemeine Musik-Zeitung remarked on the 'entirely Brahmsian character to the work'. It praised its polyphonic structure and its'romantic chiaroscuro [...], the effect of which the accompanying piano knows how to exalt excellently'. The work was nevertheless to remain Reger's only composition for this instrumentation.Separate edition from Volume 11, 'Lieder und Chorwerke' of the Max Reger Hybrid Edition of Works. / Date parution : 2023-06-01/ Répertoire / SATB et Piano

Volume 11 of the “Songs and Choral Works” Series contains the Drei Chöre op. 6 (1892), Reger’s only original composition for a mixed vocal scoring and piano, in which he used his two-color method of notation for the first time (musical text in black, performance instructions in red). In addition, the volume contains the piano reductions of some of the choral-symphonic works which Reger composed between 1903 and 1914 – the Gesang der Verklärten op. 71, Psalm 100 op. 106, Nonnen op. 112, Einsiedler op. 144a and the Requiem op. 144b, and the Weihegesang WoO V/6 for alto, mixed choir and winds. In January 2008 the Max-Reger-Institut (MRI) in Karlsruhe began publishing a scholarly-critical edition of the works of Reger (RWA). As a Hybrid Edition it is exploring new approaches in editorial techniques. The digital component for this volume will be published in an online portal.Content:Drei Chöre op. 6Gesang der Verklärten op. 71Der 100. This first part-volume contains mixed choruses composed by Reger between 1890 and 1902. It includes functional music for use in the Catholic liturgy (Opus 61 and WoO VI/12, 19) and the Protestant liturgy (Opus 79f and WoO VI/17, which provides chorale-based four-part settings for a complete church year). Reger wrote both secular folk song settings (WoO VI/10, 11), as well as sacred (WoO VI/13, 14). His Drei Chore [Three Choruses] op. 39, very demanding both compositionally and tonally, were dedicated to renowned choral societies, almost professional in standard. Palmsonntagmorgen WoO VI/18, written as a commission, forms a bridge to Reger's later motets to a certain extent. Since January 2008, the first scholarly, critical edition of the works of Max Reger (RWA) is being produced at the Max-Reger-Institute, Karlsruhe. Its design as a hybrid edition breaks new ground in the methods of editorial practice.
