When RoseWind Duo’s Clifford Leaman and Scott Herring commissioned me for Silver Linings, we could not have anticipated that we would be in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic when I composed the piece. In the early summer of 2020, when the three of us met virtually to discuss possible topics, we had all been in lockdown for several months; the causes and effects of the lockdown were at the forefront of our discussion. In themidst of daily tragedies, I had been seeing news stories using the words “silver lining” to describe unexpectedly positive situations arising from our global situation, ranging from small effects (i.e. people having time to work on projects they never could get around to doing) to global ramifications (resurging animal populations in areas where they’re no longer challenged for space with humanity).Silver Linings consists of two movements. Groundhog Day, the first movement, is slow and brooding. It embodies the strong feeling of déjà vu that so many of us experienced early on into lockdown, as we seemed to live the same day repeatedly with minor variances to our schedules. There are two main musical gestures: the first opens the piece as a slow, ascending minor chord which is a representation of uncertainty, and the secondis a falling minor scale. These gestures depict how our lives were reduced to the basic building blocks of life – wake up, eat, work, eat, sleep – as our daily activities and livelihoods were suddenly knocked down. These same two gestures are utilized in the energetic second movement, Making Lemonade, except that they are spun around to reveal their silver linings: the minor chord falls to sound centered and decisive, and the minor scale rises as it bubbles with activity. Among the seeds of despair are also foundseeds of hope, and the saxophone and marimba explore this hopefulness with great vigor and excitement.

Suite “Carapace” consists of 15 pieces composed between 2005 and 2015 collected chronologically in three volumes. The first of these volumes includes three works composed and premiered at Tokyo College of Music in 2005, Horseshoe Crab, Odontodactylus japonicus, and Fiddler Crab, and two works composed in 2007 and premiered at Yokosuka City Culture Hall, Pistol Shrimp and Japanese Spider Crab. Each of these works in this volume was inspired by the name or appearance of a particular carapace, as suggested by the titles. Through the music, we are able to examine each creature in detail with a variety of characteristic rhythms and harmonies arising from the composer's deep interest and imagination.

As is often the case with Beethoven's orchestral works, there are several often contradictory sources arising from the material used at the first performance and from the first edition, which call for the knowledgeable assessment of a specialist. Editor Jeremiah W. McGrann takes Breitkopf's original edition as the main source, in spite of the shortcomings caused by a lack of time, and places particular emphasis on the aspect of the organ's figured bass. Two authentic readings have been transmitted, and are thus both printed in the score. The newly revised orchestral material contains a new organ part that has been realized by Siegfried Petrenz and fulfills every requirement for a stylistically authentic performance.

A positive force in the Montana music landscape, pianist Steven Hesla requested a new piano concerto from Maslanka, which could be played with better high school ensembles around the state. Maslanka wrote Concerto No. 2, also in five movements, each movement arising out of a backdrop of inspiration, to meet that request. Hesla recorded the concerto on Naxos with the Illinois State University Wind Symphony. See a YouTube performance by Uschi Reifenberg (pno.) and Sinfonisches Blasorchester Mannheim with Tobias Mahl conducting.

These Three Studies for Four-handed Piano were conceived of as a triptych whose unifying principles were to be the first-slow-fast movement order of the classical sonata and a symmetrical arrangement of tonalities with A major occupying the centre (F minor- A major- C minor). The term Studies alludes not so much to the 19th century pedagogical concept of pieces-as-exercises, as to an attempt to extend, investigate and study the possibilities of expression and texture of the piano for four hands. The First Study is generated out of a single rhythmical motif whose development is modified by the intervention of two contrapuntual passages. A certain difficulty of execution arising from the need to cross hands in both sections of the keyboard conforms, in this case, to the traditional definition of study as an exercise focussed on a specific technical problem. The second piece might be defined as a study of expression, being the explicit disposition of an ostinato accompaniment and two superior voices in conversation. I cannot help, listening to this study, being reminded of the texture of the slow Largo of Bach's Concerto for 2 violins and the manifest pathos of the Andante of Prokofiev's 2nd Violin Concerto. The Third Study is an exercise in rhythmical interpenetration in which continual changes of accentuation and metre are combined with passages of a light and mellifluous character. It is a long-standing ambition of mine to supplement this work with three more triptychs and, so, complete a set of twelve studies for four-handed piano.

Exiled from Nazi Germany, the composer Hanns Eisler moved to Los Angeles in April 1942 to make a living in the Hollywood film industry. After some time of struggling, he finally was commissioned to compose the music for Fritz Lang's anti-Nazi film Hangmen Also Die , whose script was in large part written by Bertolt Brecht. Following this, Eisler worked together with Theodor W. Adorno on the book Composing for the Films . Completed in 1944, it was not until 1947 that an English version of the book was published by Oxford University Press. Shortly before the book went into print, Adorno withdrew his co-authorship in order to avoid attracting the attention of the House Committee on Un-American Activities. The study provides detailed analyses and correlations of the book Composing for the Films and the soundtrack of Hangmen Also Die. The reflections on Adorno's and Eisler's book outline the complex textual history, problems arising in connection with the co-authorship, and essential views and theses, not least in view of the aspect of the Composition for the Hollywood Film. The part on the film music of Hangmen Also Die focuses mainly on its in-depth analysis. The study is based on extensive archive research and contributes not only to explore Eisler's life and oeuvre but also to the research of Adorno and Brecht as well as general music in exile and film music.
