Harald Genzmer's composition Divertimento di danza for string orchestra clearly continues the baroque form of the divertimento. This light music * in the truest sense of the word * consisted of a sequence of loose movements with free forms and dance movements alternat-ing in varied succession. The divertimento comprised five to six movements. Genzmer kept to all these facts but he brought new life into the old forms. Though he did not compose in the old style, he respected certain rules of the traditional form. Ouverture * Allegro (Fugato) * Adagio * Presto (on an Old French dance) * Finale (on an English dance movement).

This splendidly-sounding piece consists of a vocal movement based on the baroque concertino ripieno principle and a dance movement whose particular attraction results from a long flageolet passage.

For the 20th anniversary season of the Cassatt String Quartet, Godfrey created a three-movement work that has been hailed as some of the most ambitious chamber music we have heard from any living composer. (New Music Connoisseur) Built on the concept of looking back/looking forward, Ricordanza-Speranzo opens with a quiet, reflective movement, before a furious second movement of ever-shifting meter (con furore). The third movement begins with a piano solo passage. Natalie Zhu, who performed the Philadelphia premiere with the Daedalus Quartet, says, There's a huge piano solo at the beginning, and it's almost like an improvisation. It's written out but it feels like you're improvising. When the strings join in, Zhu says, It's almost like a waltz. It's lively and pretty, and the strings and piano are having fun. We're trading melodies. It's almost like a conversation between the instruments.

This German dance is the 4th of 6 movements in Beethoven's final quartet, composed the year before his death. As with most string quartet music there is lots of interest in parts as they weave back and forth with imitative motives. The dynamics are exquisite and make a great teaching point as well as the 3 beat slurs which occur in all parts. Duration 3:00.

This splendidly instrumented work successfully combines 20th-century musical language with the antique elements deriving from its theme - for example, in the first movement we immediately find an ancient Greek asymmetrical rhythm. The second movement takes us on an adventurous journey to those astonishing geological wonders, the Meteoras the third movement presents a picture of the Delphic dancers, in its title the fourth movement indicates the form used in it, which preserves the unity between the thousands-of-years-old building and its contrasting environment, echoing to the music of the bouzouki. In the suite the composer expertly exploits the possibilities of instrumentationoffered by the wind orchestra, this extremely effective work can be a rewarding concert piece for any ensemble. (Recorded by Mirasound on CD 'Salute from Hungary' wwm 500.009 for World Wind Music label - www.worldwindmusic.nl ).

Written during the winter of 2007, this work is a metaphor of the three stages of a short but intense love story. The first movement is called Poniente. This is the name of a rainy wind that comes from west. In this sense, west is not only the place where the sun sets, but where night begins. The first movement represents the beginning, the happiness and freshness of something new. The violin evokes freshness and spontaneity over the constant rhythm of the guitar, which plays the higher voice. While the violin signs happily, the guitar, instead of being just its accompaniment, plays the role of a counterpoint with its rhythmical and constant theme. The second movement is called Largo-Balada-Largo and it's divided in two different parts. In the first one, guitar plays alone, reflexive and slow, representing the moments of loneliness of the one that waits for the lovers reunion. In the second movement, violin and guitar begin a dialogue where the violin plays a sweet yearning ballad, while the guitar answers as a baroque counterpoint. At the end, calm comes back, as in the first part of the second movement. The third movement is called Danza ritual and it is the most violent of the three parts. It represents the lovers reunion, the resolution of all the controlled excitement. It's the flame that consumes quickly but intensely. At the end of this part, the violin reintroduces the main theme of the first movement, but with a variation, more intense and dramatic. This dramatic and intense quality is also due to the guitar ostinato, which ends in a hysteric trill. This leads us again to the first part, ending the third movement and this work in a sudden setback, as an interrogation tag.

Dance of the Whale was commissioned by the Spanish music foundation, Musica et Orbi, at the instigation of its president, Frank De Vuyst. It is part of a unique project which involved nine composers each writing a short movement, describing ananimal of the composers’ choice, to form a suite called Bestiarium. A consortium of bands around the world helped to fund the project and the world premiere of the suite took place in March 2013 in Medell n, Colombia. This work was premiered by Idee Fixe Wind Quintet in Helsinki in January 2010. The first movement is a four-voiced canon, the second a fantastic variation on one tone: F-sharp/G-flat. Danza, the last movement further develops the thematic material from Canon. The duration of the work is ca. 12 minutes.

The Sonatina del Sur (Sonatina of the South) was commissioned by Isabel Siewersâ?? mother as a 34th birthday present for her daughter. Its music pays token, rather than imitative, homage to South American music. Thus the sonata form first movement, whose brief development section accounts for the workâ??s â??diminutiveâ?? title, merely hints at syncopations that are as common in South America as they are in Europe. The Canción de cuna (Cradle Song) is unusual in the fact that it is played entirely in natural harmonics â?? no string touches a fret from start to finish, a compositional challenge I had long planned to face. The third movement was originally titled Milonga, but when the dedicatee said that, although it has a South American air over it, and the rhythm is right, it was not really like a milonga, it was renamed! Perhaps, though, it captures a little of the happy and lightness-of-touch character of its eponym. The Danza negra, another common South American genre, is energetic, with a variety of percussive gestures that demand extreme agility on the part of the performer.

This suite was written in the style of traditional Russian folk music, but does not use existing melodies or themes as its basis. The colourful and varied work contains a number of surprising turns, but also familiar sounds. After the introduction, a kind of Trepak follows ? a fairly quick dance with attractive themes. The second movement (Garovot) is predominantly slow and conveys some melancholy, although, during a more dynamic passage the passion flares up again. Finally, the Troika takes us along in a reindeer sleigh through a grand snowy landscape. This is a wonderful tribute to the music of Eastern Europe in the style of some of the great Russian masters.
