During his experience as a band conductor and teacher of wind orchestra conducting at university, Franco Cesarini has dealt with the topic of warm-ups very frequently. Throughout these long years of conducting he has had the opportunity to try many existing methods, evaluating their advantages and disadvantages. After a long time, he has decided to compile a collection of chorales for warm-ups, which are organized according to the criteria that he considers most effective. While working on his60 Warm-up Chorales for Concert Band, Franco Cesarini has always borne in mind that amateur musicians play for pleasure. He feels that it is extremely important that they have satisfaction at every moment of the rehearsal and not to start the rehearsal with needless “punishing” exercises. Nobody is really motivated to start playing with scales, long notes, or tricky rhythmical exercises. There is often a distinguished absentee in band rehearsals, namely music itself! Although this publication does not foresee a specific tempo for the chorales, they should often be performed rather slowly but without dragging. Dynamics are not indicated, so that the conductor has the opportunity to draw the attention of the musicians to his gestures and to make them react according to his indications. Timpani and bell parts have been added with the aim of not leaving the percussionists completely inactive during the warm-up phase, but can also be omitted. The chorales are written in four parts (SATB) and are also playable in smaller groups. The four voices can be played in different combinations of woodwinds or brass quartets or in mixed combinations. The collection includes ten chorales for the following keys: D flat major, A flat major, E flat major, B flat major, F major and C major. With his 60 Warm-up Chorales Franco Cesarini would like to convey the message to play the chorales in a musical way, thus raising the musiciansawareness of phrasing, the right interpretation of cadences, rubato and agogic. As the title says, Greek Folk Dances is entirely in the sign of Greek dances starting with a kalamatianos, followed by a zeibekiko. The piece ends with a hasapiko. Franco Cesarini composed this four-movement piece originally for concert band in memory of Provençal composer Darius Milhaud. Pastorale de Provence is a piece rich in musical references and the names of the movements - La villageoise (The Villager), Le petit berger (The little Shepherd), La princesse (The Princess) and Le lutin (The Imp) – have been inspired to Franco Cesarini by t18th century French composers who often used descriptive titles to underline the character of their pieces. Another important facet of this composition is the form of the different movements: ancient dance form has been incorporated into each movement, namely a round in the first movement, a musette in the second, a pavane in the third movement, and in the fourth a farandole.

To mark the 30th anniversary of Mosaici Bizantini Franco Cesarini decided to publish this revised version. He added a few instruments to the instrumentation and completely revised the notation. The work is now available in large-sized full score and exclusively from the composer's publishing house. For this grand work, Franco Cesarini was inspired by three byzantine mosaics, which can be seen in churches in Venice and Palermo. He took the musical motives from Gregorian chants. The mosaics concerned depict the following extracts from “The Gospel according to St. Matthew”: 1. The Nativity 2. The Temple of Jerusalem 3. Richard Strauss' Wiener Fanfare, the shorter version of Festmusik der Stadt Wien - a piece originally written for ten trumpets, seven trombones, two tubas, and timpani - was the basis of this arrangement for concert band by Franco Cesarini. Strauss completed the “Festmusik” on 14 January 1943 after having previously received the “Beethoven Prize” in 1942. He dedicated the piece to the City Council of Vienna as a sign of his gratitude. Strauss conducted the premiere of this work in the Festival Hall of Vienna City Town Hall on 9th April 1943. An arrangement that highlights the characteristics of Franco Cesarini's writing.

This overture, called Sinfonia, is without doubt one of the best original works for concert band to emerge from the 19th century. It is characterised by its fluid spontaneity as well as its rich texture. This arrangement off ers bands the opportunity to perform a work of high artistic value, which otherwise would be forgotten. Deze ouverture met de titel Sinfonia is zonder twijfel een van de beste oorspronkelijke 19e-eeuwse werken voor blaasorkest. De componist Ponchielli werkte jarenlang als dirigent in Cremona en Piacenza (waar hij een blaasorkest leidde). Bright Dawn Overture was commissioned to Franco Cesarini by the Swiss Band Association as part of a project for the renewal and expansion of the artistic repertoire. “There was never a night or a problem that could defeat sunrise or hope.”. This sentence by the English philosopher Bernard Williamsinspired Franco Cesarini in composing this overture. In fact, even the darkest night is always followed by the sunrise and metaphorically, in every moment of difficulty, man clings to the hope of a better future. Bright Dawn Overture is written in the classic form of an Italian overture (fast-slow-fast). It is intended as a hymn of hope of recovery after a period of great difficulty. A single theme characterizes the composition, passing through the various registers and presents itself in new forms, while constantly being transformed. In the central part the theme takes on an almost mystical character, while in the finale it presents itself in a heroic guise and the composition concludes with a gesture of decisive optimism. A piece accessible to most concert bands, perfect as an opening work!
