This work is a reworking of the music written by Nino Rota for the film of the same name by Federico Fellini, Oscar winner in 1957. In 1967 Rota composed the music for the ballet La strada for the Teatro alla Scala, in collaboration with the choreographer Mario Pistoni, where Carla Fracci was expected to play the role of Gelsomina. This show has always remained alive in my memory since in those years I began the profession of flutist at La Scala, where I also had the opportunity to perform ballet. The transcription traces the salient moments of the plot, highlighted by the captions taken from the original score. Free of virtuosity, so appreciated by the flutists, it is conceived with the intention of restoring the dramaturgical tension of the Fellini-Rota masterpiece. (C. Tabarelli).

Dallo scolaro al virtuoso nasce nel ’94 grazie al prezioso contributo di Marcos Volonterio che nella fase iniziale cura con Vittorio Nicolucci il progetto e la scelta degli autori. La contemporaneità di questo lavoro con la nascita della manifestazione Musica Umanità, con la preparazione dell’Annuario Italiano della Musica Antica e Danza Storica e con la partenza dall’Italia di Marcos Volonterio ne avevano posticipato la pubblicazione. Il Convegno Nazionale sul Flauto Dolce, organizzato dall’Associazione Consort Veneto, avvenuto a Padova il 6-7 giugno ’98, costituì l’occasione per presentare questa monografia in una forma ormai quasi definitiva. Rimanendo quanto più possibile fedeli alla forma già esistente, priva sin dall’origine di una prefazione tecnica, si è lavorato, da aprile a oggi, a una nuova stesura definitiva, dando l’opportunità a tutti gli autori di rivedere i testi. This work was commissioned by the civilian wind orchestra Shimizu il compagno, based in Shimizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, as a commemorative work for their 10th Anniversary. The world premiere was performed by the ensemble, conducted by Hiromichi Hamada in 2017. Having held discussions with the head of the orchestra, Tomohiro Tsuji, and members of the group, Satoshi Yagisawa settled on a central motif for this commemorative work: fellow, or companion, in the sense of the Italian il compagno, which features in the orchestra’s name. The work also strives to describe the characteristic friendliness of Shimizu city, a place known for itswarmth and kindness which is visible from both Mount Fuji and the sea. The composition is written in Yagisawa’s typical dramatic style with an atmosphere of scintillating light and lyrical warmth, making it an excellent choice for opening a concert.
