Clarinet and Piano-Following the Henle edition of the Grand Concerto In F Minor Op. 5 (HN 1209) the series of Crusell’s Clarinet concertos has been expanded to include the one in B flat major op. 11. The Swedish composer washimself a prominent Clarinet virtuoso and the concertos were tailor-made for himself so to speak. Despite being technically very demanding the Concerto In B Flat Major avoids being overly virtuosic and wins usover with its melodic ingenuity. It is a very welcome addition to the early Romantic repertoire for the Clarinet. The clarinettist Nicolai Pfeffer edited the edition in an exemplary manner consulting the solesurviving source the first edition of 1829. Johannes Umbreit was responsible for the study score which wonderfully fits the hands.

Composed at the end of 1785 Mozart?s Piano Concerto in E-flat major forms a group of three with the two famous concerti in A major K. 488 and in C minor K. 491 which he completed in March of the following year. What they all have in common is Mozart?s inclusion of Clarinets in the Orchestra for the first time. In this he succeeded to particularly impressive effect with the lyrical passages in the slow sections of the E-flat-major concerto which was well received by the audience at the first performance. Indeed his father Leopold reports in a letter that Mozart ?had to repeat? the Andante immediately. G.Henle Publishers is issuing this concerto undeservedly overshadowed by its famous siblings in a handy study edition in full score; a Piano reduction is in preparation.

The Bohuslav Martinu Complete Edition III/1/5. Par MARTINU BOHUSLAV. “Incarnation” (1956), Bohuslav Martinu’s fourth piano concerto, follows an atypical two-movement structure. It was composed for Martinu’s friend Rudolf Firkušný, who played from a copy of the autograph until 1970, when the composition was first put into print. The next work, “Concerto in B flat major for Piano and Orchestra”, known under the name “Fantasia Concertante”, was to be Martinu’s very last concert work. The concerto in three movements, composed at the request of Swiss pianist Margrit Weber, is quite different from the previous work in terms of its compositional means. In this case, Martinu strongly influenced the edition of the work. The present volume of the Complete Edition of works by Bohuslav Martinu is based mainly on contemporary copies containing the composer’s own modifications. This new edition of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 3 unites both works for the first time in a single score. In addition to a difficult-to-find version of Tchaikovsky's original PianoConcerto No. 2 in G major this edition features Alexander Siloti's suggested revisions. Although Siloti had the composer's permission to edit the work he significantly shortened the second movement despiteTchaikovsky's objections and published the concerto with his own revisions after the composer's untimely death. Piano Concerto No. 4 In C Minor (concerto pour Piano en ut mineur) Op. 44 by Camille Saint-Saëns is the composer's most structurally innovative Piano concerto. In one sense it is like a four-movement symphony but these are grouped in pairs. That is the piece is divided into two parts each of which combines two main movements (Part 1: I. Moderatetempo Theme and Variations in C Minor; II. Slower Theme and Variations in A-flat Major; Part 2: III. Scherzo in C Minor; IV. Finale in C Major). However in each part there is a bridge-like transitional section between the two main 'movements' for example a fugal Andante in part II functions as aninterlude between the two main sections. The concerto begins with a gently mischievous chromatic subject heard in dialogue between the strings and piano soloist and continues in a creative thematic development similar to Saint-Saëns' Third Symphony. The composer demonstrates brilliant skill in employing the piano and orchestra almost equally. In the Andante he moves to A-flat major with a chorale-like theme in the woodwinds (also strikingly similar to the tune of the Third Symphony's final section) and uses this as a platform on which to build a series of variations before bringing the movement to a quiet close. The Allegro vivace begins again in C minor as a high-spirited scherzo using material foreshadowed in the first movement. 2/4 and 6/8 are playfully juxtaposed throughout. At one point the Piano boldly leads the orchestra in an energetic 6/8 theme in Eflat major. Eventually the orchestra moves to a lush Andante recapitulating the Andante section from the first movement. Rather suddenly the piano climbs up to a flurry of double octave trills and a climactic trumpet fanfare leads to the jubilant finale based on a hymn-like theme in triple time.
