The piece was commissioned by Shobi College of Music (Tokyo, Japan) for their entrance ceremony for freshman students in 2010, premiered by Shobi Ceremonial Wind Orchestra (Hirohisa Takanashi, conductor).In the introduction, woodwinds and euphonium play a solemn passage, followed by a brilliant fanfare in brass and percussion. After the heart-warming middle section, banda trumpets and trombones play a polyphonic passage, which leads to a grand andmagnificent finale to conclude the work. Aggression, despair, but also hope for peace can be clearly heard within this work. In Banja Luka Jan de Haan reflects aspects of the former Yugoslavia, stricken by a civil war which brought terrible suffering to the people of this area. Banja Luka was written for the International Horn Festival in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands. Gecomponeerd in 1995 ter gelegenheid van het Internationaal Hoorn Festival in Leeuwarden. Banja Luka is een stad in Bosnië-Herzegovina en kent een rijke geschiedenis, wat blijkt uit de vele bewaard gebleven bezienswaardigheden. Mededoor zijn strategische ligging heeft Banja Luka achtereenvolgens onder Romeins, Turks en Oostenrijks bewind gestaan en ontwikkelde het zich in de loop van de eeuwen tot een belangrijk handelscentrum. De stad werd in 1969 dooreen aardbeving grotendeels verwoest en is daarna weer in moderne stijl opgebouwd. De naam Banja Luka betekent bad van Lukas. Volgens het volksgeloof heeft de evangelist Lukas hier het beroep van arts uitgeoefend en geneeskrachtigebronnen ontdekt, die nog steeds in gebruik zijn.Deze compositie vertolkt de componist zijn gevoelens ten aanzien van het in de jaren negentig door een burgeroorlog geteisterde voormalig Joegoslavië. Een agressieve inleiding stelthet conflict voor, waarna de saxofoonsectie het drama verklankt. Dit gedeelte mondt uit in een gebed, weergegeven door de trompet en de trombonesolist. Nadat het conflict weer even de kop opsteekt, volgt een tamelijk lichtvoetiggedeelte, waarmee de hoop op vrede tot uitdrukking wordt gebracht. Dat deze hoop voorbarig is, blijkt uit het feit dat de heersers (uitgebeeld door de altsaxofoon en de fluit) anders beslissen. De strijdkrachten rukken vervolgensop en laten een spoor van dood en verderf achter. Het noodlot slaat bikkelhard toe: onschuldige mensen worden verkracht en vermoord en er vinden op grote schaal etnische zuiveringen plaats. De bevolking lijdt.Aggression, Verzweiflung, aber auch Hoffnung - all das kann man in Banja Luka hören. In diesem Werk verarbeitet Jan de Haan seine Überlegungen über das ehemalige Yugoslawien, über das ein grausamer Bürgerkrieg hinwegfegte. Banja Luka wurde für das Internationale Horn Festival in Leeuwarden in den Niederlanden geschrieben.

This composition is based on a passacaglia theme, in which artistic perfection, symphonic drama and oriental melody lines play a role. The passacaglia is originally a dance made up of a series of variations above a bass line constantly present as an ostinato. It is not in this sense that the Symphonic Variations are in the passacaglia form but in the sense of the open form of the variations. Jacob de Haan, himself originally an organist, took his inspiration for this piece from the famous passacaglia for organ in C-minor by J.S. Bach. Following the introduction of the passacaglia theme (in the bass) the entry by the trumpets and trombones forms the majestic start to amusical adventure, in which this theme (often fragmentary) returns in variations. Then there follow two faster movements with dramatic contrasts and virtuose passages. Particularly striking here is the use of two characteristic intervals from the beginning of the theme namely the minor second and the augmented fourth. An apause in the composition comes in the slow bridge where a syncopated bourdon (perfect fifth) is constantly repeated. The tension grows in dynamics and harmony, and the oriental-flavour becomes obvious in the melody. We arrive at a faster movement via an accelerando, in which a perpetuum mobile based on the passacaglia theme is central. Finally the whole flows into a martial theme, in which the ostinato accompaniment n the descant derives from the passacaglia theme.

This concert work, the latest of Jacob de Haan works based on American states, is a suite in three movements, based on a well-known folk tune from Arkansas. In the course of this varied work the folk song appears in its complete form and in fragments, in major and in minor, as a ballad in a lyrical orchestration, as a blues, accompanied by a jazzy rhythm and at the end again in its pure form. In the process, all instrumental groups of the brass band get their chance to shine!De Amerikaanse staat Arkansas wordt wel ‘The Natural State’ of ‘The Land of Opportunity’ genoemd. Dit concertwerk in de reeks door Jacob de Haan verklankte staten is een suite in drie delen, gebaseerd op een bekende volksmelodie uit Arkansas.Tijdens de eerste maten komt in de euphoniums en bassen direct de volksmelodie naar voren, die uitmondt in een aantal lyrische maten. Deze vormen de inleiding tot een sneller tempo (Allegro risoluto) waarin de melodie in fragmenten wordt geëxposeerddoor euphoniums, baritons en bugel, canonisch beantwoord door de trombones. In het daaropvolgende Allegro molto klinkt een concertino-achtig spel in diverse instrumentgroepen, afgewisseld met een nieuwe, zangerige melodie. Het deel sluit af met devolksmelodie in de trombones, maar nu gedempt.Het tweede deel is een ballade waarin de volksmelodie in majeur klinkt. Na een inleiding van gedempte cornetten en trombones gevolgd door zacht koper is de melodie te horen in de euphoniums en baritons in een lyrische zetting. Even wordt detoonsoort weer mineur, wanneer instrumentgroepen elkaar imiteren. Met een bugelsolo komen we terug in majeur. Na een tussenspel klinkt een ornamentele variatie, vertolkt door een cornetsolo en euphoniumsolo,waarna een naspel met gedempte cornetten en trombones volgt. Het laatste deel komt tot klinken in een flitsend Allegro vivace, aanvankelijk vergezeld door chromatische lijnen in de begeleiding en een markant, door kwartentriolen afgewisseld ritme in het slagwerk. Dan klinkt de blues door in de cornetten enhoorns, begeleid door een jazzy ritme waarin de sfeer van de Bolero van Ravel even doorklinkt. Dit leidt via een parallelle triolenpassage terug naar het beginthema van dit deel, dat nu in diverse instrumenten te horen is. Dan verschijnt devolksmelodie weer in haar pure vorm in de euphoniums, waarop de bugel en later de solocornet reageert. Via enkele syncopische maten horen we het begin van de melodie nu in majeur gespeeld door respectievelijk cornetten en hoorns. Het slotgedeelteomvat een melodieuze lijn in lange noten die leidt naar een spetterend einde in kwartentriolen.Dieses Konzertwerk fügt sich in die Reihe der von Jacob de Haan vertonten amerikanischen Staaten. Es ist eine Suite in drei Sätzen auf der Grundlage von einem bekannten Volkslied aus Arkansas. In diesem abwechslungsreichen Werk erklingt das Volkslied ganz und in Fragmenten, in Moll und in Dur, als Ballade in lyrischer Besetzung, in Variationen, als Blues, von einem jazzigen Rhythmus begleitet, und zum Schluss wieder in seiner reinen Form. Dabei kommen alle Instrumentengruppen der Brass Band zum Zug!

The Bennett Band Books published in four volumes starting in 1923 were used to teach the march form and style to millions of young band musicians in the middle of the twentieth century.
