Though Byrd's In nomine settings for consort were probably the first of his works to circulate widely, the dating of his consort music in general is problematical. The famous 'Browning' variations are probably an early display of the composer's mastery of the form. The only complete Fantasia a 4 is found in the Psalmes, Songs & Sonnets of 1611. Two other examples are reconstructed from fragmentary sources, and appear in this volume with hymn-settings and Misereres, two pavans and a galliard.

Complementing their achievements as composers of Italianate vocal music represented elsewhere in the series, this volume brings together consort works by two English Catholics who left England for the continent. Philips belonged to a generation that focused on stylised dance rather than fantasia, and many of his five-part consort dances exist also as keyboard pieces. Dering was born a generation later. Whereas his five-part fantasias were core repertoire for early 17th-century viol players, interest in the stylised dance had by then begun to wane. Several of Dering's pavans and almaines survive in a single source only, and lack outer parts, which have been completed by the editor.

Bach's flute music brought to a successful end

Perhaps Bach actually did allow himself to be swept away by Telemann's enthusiasm for the Flute traversiere, the Baroque transverse flute, for which he wrote a whole series of pieces, including the Trio Sonata in G major BWV 1039. With the Urtext edition of the sonata, which presumably is the arrangement of a lost first version for two violins and basso continuo, Breitkopf adds the finishing touches to the series of Bach's Complete Flute Works edited by the renowned flutist Barthold Kuijken. In the publication's textual segments, Kuijken takes a comprehensive look at the various sources and versions. Also very useful for performance practice are the unique characteristics found among musicians who are particularly knowledgeable in early music.The continuo has been realized by Ewald Demeyere, taking contemporary treatises into account.A clear, informative and utterly practical edition of this much loved and important trio sonata. The musical typeface here is extremely clear and of a sensible size. A year ago, Westminster Williamson Voices joined a consortium called “The Scattered Light Consortium” along with Jo-Michael Scheibe at USC (the USC Thornton Chamber Singers) and Jamie Glasgow (The Glasgow School of Art Choir). I was attracted to the concept not only because of the composers who are dear friends, but because the pieces were set to poems by one of America’s greatest poets, Dana Gioia. When the two works arrived from composer Sarah Rimkus and Thomas LaVoy, I had, as they say, “the wind knocked out of me.” While both poems could be interpreted using a broader life perspective, they spoke to me and the choir in ways that were immediately deep and profound. Both poems provide light and hope to all of us who are living through this change at Westminster into something unknown. And then, shortly after this recording was completed, the pandemic struck and we were in isolation from our music-making family. We were thankful that we were able to complete this recording.   All of the music on the CD reflects our hope for the future as we climb a crooked ladder leading to, hopefully, a brighter new time for our beloved college, and our lives beyond the pandemic. Our desire is to see a glimmer of light behind what seems a very closed door.
