A new engraving of Thomas Attwood's delightful miniature, Come Holy Ghost , this piece is suitable for Whitsundtide or for general use. Thomas Attwood (1765-1838) is perhaps best known as the composer of such charming miniatures as Come, Holy Ghost , which is in essence a simple, threeverse hymn. Its elegant melody, first sung by soprano, then by a chorus (or quartet and chorus) is reminiscent of Mozart's delicate masterpiece, Ave verum corpus . This is perhaps unsurprising -Attwood took composition lessons from Mozart in Vienna, and one of his contemporaries quotes Mozart as saying: 'He partakes more of my style than any scholar I ever had - and I predict, that he will prove a sound musician.' Attwood worked closely with the royal family throughout his life. He taught music to the Prince of Wales, was appointed composer and eventually organist to the Chapel Royal, and organist at St Paul's Cathedral (he is buried under the organ there). He's become a sought-after Nashville session player and one of the most admired fiddlers in bluegrass. Jim covers many things on these 2 DVDs, but they really break into three sections. After some discussion about early learning experiences, AcuTab's John Lawless leads Jim through a discussion on improvising and building solos on a number of popular bluegrass standards. Two songs, Banks of The Ohio and Pretty Polly, are each played and demonstrated in 3 different keys. Before demonstrating the tunes, Jim breaks down the scale and common positions for each key in turn. He shows where to find the melody, and where adjacent double stops are located, as well as licks and phrases that suit each song. Attention is given to both playing a melody-based solo and what a fiddle can do to assist the band sound in accompaniment. He also carefully teaches four songs he has recorded - three of his own (Nature of the Beast, Devil's Courthouse and #6 Barn Dance) plus Bill Monroe's classic Wheel Hoss. After being slowly demonstrated lick-by-lick, they are each shown (fast and slow) in a split screen orientation. A printed booklet with standard notation for each of these songs is included. Twelve To Remember Twelve To Come for Trombone and Ensemble was composed by Peter Bruun in 2001.Commisioned by Jesper Juul Sørensen Written for Jesper Juul Sørensen and Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen provided with funds from the Danish State Art Foundation.Programme note:The trombone concerto has been given the slightly cryptic title Twelve to remember twelve to come. The title refers to twelve irregular beats that are struck at the start of the piece by the percussionist on three clanging bottles. The figure 12 later becomes the most important building-block in the rhythm of the piece and the twelve beats fromthe beginning return right at the end. The concerto was written for the trombone virtuoso Jesper Juul Sørensen originally for trombone and large chamber ensemble. It was given its first performance in 2001 by Jesper Juul Sørensen and Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen. Later the piece was reworked for trombone and orchestra - a version given its first performance by Jesper Juul Sørensen and the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra in 2003.Peter Bruun.
