Written after William Shakespeare, Ophelie?s death is a piece by Hector Berlioz. For two female voices (Soprano and Contralto) accompanied by a Piano, this piece tells the story of the death of Ophelie, while she was picking some flowers next to a torrential river. Even though the end of the story is sad, the music is highly lyrical resulting from the combination of the two voices, and the Piano part could be played by an upper intermediate player. Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) was a French Romantic composer who made a significant contribution to music. His best-known pieces are his ''Fantastic Symphony'' and his ''Requiem''..

“The Young Wives' Song, written in 1925 by Attila Jozsef (1905-1937) is a poem I found accidentally in the summer of 2010. It struck me on reading it that it can have two different meanings: a positive and a tragic resonance. By employing different singing techniques, I compiled and set to music the lines of verse, so that sometimes one meaning, sometimes the other comes to the fore. I was just 20 when I wrote the piece, just as Attila Jozsef was when he wrote the poem.†–Mate Balogh. The full duration of the song is approximately 5 minutes. It was premiered by Boglárka Terray on 2 October 2010, in Budapest. Hungarian Text.

Lajos Bárdos (1899-1986), composer, musicologist, teacher, and choral conductor, laid down, together with Kodály, the foundations of 20th-century Hungarian choral music. Through his work as a conductor, he raised the standards of Hungarian choral singing to an international level in a few decades. His compositions were directed towards cultivating Hungarian choral life: they draw on Renaissance polyphony and Hungarian folk music, following Kodály and Bartók. His works, which are models of choral writing, deal sensitively with Hungarian prosody and radiate an inner harmony and vigor. A selection of his most popular choral works has been published with English texts by Gail Needleman in five volumes.

“André Messager (1853-1929) was a composition and Piano pupil of Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924). They collaborated during the summer of 1881 to compose Mass of the Fisherman from Villerville and the first performance was in aid of the fisherman's charitable association. The Mass comprises five movements; 1) Kyrie, 2) Gloria Benedictus, 3) Sanctus, 4) O Salutaris, and 5) Agnus Dei. Mass of the Fisherman from Villerville is a Missa Brevis for female choir accompanied by chamber orchestra. Given its specific arrangement for female voices, Fauré and Messager's Mass of the Fisherman from Villerville is an ideal and alternative performance work.&rdquo.

Written in 1885, the eight songs after texts by the now little-known poet Hermann von Gilm have a special place in Richard Strauss' corpus of Lieder. For the first time, he composed an entire set of songs on texts by a single poet, collecting them into one opus that was also to appear in print. Some of the numbers in it, like Zueignung, Die Nacht, and Allerseelen, are among the most popular Strauss songs of all time, but the entire cycle with its well-planned structure is also worthy of closer examination and performance. The aspiring composer quite consciously aligns himself with the tradition ranging from Schubert to Wolf, choosing the highly Romantic subject of unrequited love and illuminating its most diverse facets. The primary source for the Henle Urtext edition is the first edition from 1887, which Strauss furnished with a dedication to the Royal Bavarian chamber singer Heinrich Vogl - a serious invitation to today's male singers not to leave these wonderful Strauss songs solely to female singers!

It is a great pleasure to present, with Thanatopsis, maestro Kissin's opus 4, an expressive setting of the ground-breaking poem from the quill of William Cullen Bryant. Published in in the form known today in 1821, it is an early example of American romantic poetry of the 19th century. Bryant is today reckoned among the group of “Fireside Poets†or “Schoolroom Poets,†names that allude to the places where their poems were usually recited. His poems – first and foremost Thanatopsis (“A Consideration of Deathâ€) as his most famous – are rooted in the English tradition, but at the same time show Bryant's openness to a genuine American language and lifeworld. Evgeny Kissin's setting is a large vocal scene intensely informed by recitative, which congenially allows the prevailing mood of the text to resound. Our edition additionally includes German and French translations of the poem and an informative afterword about Bryant's life and work and the genesis of Thanatopsis.
