This collection follows Corelli's famous Op. 6 and like that is divided in eight 'Concerti da chiesa' and four 'Concerti da camera' with the eighth work like Corelli's being structured like a Christmas concerto.The study score is based on the Locatelli Complete Edition which makes the works of the Italian master available in accordance with the most recent research and current musicological techniques of editing.With German/English preface and Critical Report!

It was the Weihnachtskonzert (Christmas concerto) in C major that won special popularity continuing a tradition which was cultivated by Corelli with his pastoral at the end of Op. 6 No. 8 or by Torelli in his Op. 8 No. 6 and reaching to the pastoral in Händel's Messiahs and to the sinfonia in the second cantata of Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas oratorium. This finally originates from the music-making of shepherds - coming from the Abruzzi and from Calabria to Rome at Christmas to play the shawm and the bagpipes in front of the cribs. Hence the popular consecutive thirds and the sustained bass tones characterizing the first Largo a genuine siciliano in the rocking typically dotted 12/8 time.

Christmas Concertos have always been popular either enhancing the seasonal festivities or as musical works in their own right. Such pieces were common in the Baroque era one being by the Italian composer Giuseppe Torelli (1658-1709). His Christmas Concerto is in the character og a siciliana a shepherds' dance in 12/8 time also know as 'Pastoral'.

This is one of the best Cello concertos of the twentieth century and readily communicates the Bohuslav Martinu strong feelings for his homeland. Written over the Christmas and New year period of 1944-45 in New York it is full ofhis reactions to that last dramatic winter of the war and the desire to go home. It is an expansive work over 35 minutes in length in the standard three movements. Typically for Martinu the first movement is inModerato tempo. The opening gesture is highly characteristic: A pulsing rhythm establishes itself in the orchestra and a striving rising theme with a contradictory rhythm contends with it. The second movement Andante pocomoderato has a general pulse that is not much slower than that of the first. It is episodic with a faster central section and then a truly magical and heartfelt treatment of the main subject in which Martinu expresses hislonging for home. The final movement Allegro is a driving energetic conclusion with a solo cadenza that breaks the ongoing rhythm and provides a touching moment of contemplation before the joyous conclusion. This editioncontains a Piano reduction of the Orchestral part for rehearsal purposes.
