20 Hymn Arrangements-Hymns From King’s is a collection of 20 hymns for Choir and Organ arranged by Stephen Cleobury – Director of Music at King’s College Cambridge for more than 25 years. Covering the entire church year including Christmas and Easter Hymns From King’s is not just a book of descants – it also contains varied arrangements and accompaniments for many of the most popular hymns sung not only at King’s College but also in churches around the world.

Christmas Oratorio by Bob Chilcott for SATB and soloists (M-S T & B) with Organ and Flute or small ensemble.With this majestic work Chilcott takes on a landmark of the choral repertory the Christmas Oratorio. Words from St Luke and St Matthew are intertwined with 16th-19th-century poetry to create a compelling retelling of the Christmas story. Five hymn texts are set to new original melodies that take their place among the season's tradition of great hymnody and enable the audience or congregation to join in with the choir. As in the St John Passion much of the narrative is presented by a tenor soloist in the role ofEvangelist with focal points such as the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis and Rossetti's 'Love came down at Christmas' taken by mezzo-soprano and bass soloists. The chorus is integral to the storytelling assuming small character roles and taking centre stage in two unaccompanied movements. A solo Flute characterizes the angels and the mellow tones of the brass ensemble evoke a sense of festive tradition.

Best known for his exemplary exuberant orchestral work The Planets Gustav Holst’s diverse gamut also included hymns pastoral songs and folk music. He and the poet Robert Bridges became great friends over time their friendship blossoming after Holst sought copyright of one of Bridges’ works in May 1925. This is a terrific hymn set to a poem of Bridges' typical of the combined workings of these two great English artists and has been edited here for SATB mixed choir and organ pedals by Alan Gibbs.

Two Human Hymns comprises of settings for six-part choir and organ of two poems by 17th century English poets who are almost exact contemporaries; George Herbert and Henry King.The music for the choir is mostly composedin simple songlike shapes which are little hymns. The texts though clearly relate to Christian beliefs could be more widely applicable to all human experience which is why they have called them 'Human Hymns'.Thus Love BadeMe Welcome (G.Herbert) whilst obviously a Christian allegory can be read as a gently hypnotic love song and it is attempted to capture something of this atmosphere in the setting. Like to the Falling of a Star (H.King) although it mentions no God could be a Calvinist sermon capping its lovely account of the wonders of nature with an almost operatically sinister denouement. In the first half of the piece the music bubbles upwards fresh andoptimistic; in the second half like all those doomed sinners it is going down down down.The first performance was given by University of Aberdeen Chapel Choir on 22nd October 1995. Matthew Owens' St Matthew Passion for soloists SATB and Organ. Written for the Choir of Wells Cathedral of which Matthew Owens is Organist and Master of the Choristers this setting of the St Matthew Passion is ideally suited to liturgical performance during Holy Week. The principal role of the Evangelist is taken by a baritone soloist who narrates the story of Christ's trial and Crucifixion in unaccompanied chant. The other smaller solo roles of Judas (Tenor) Pilate (Tenor) Jesus (Bass) and Pilate's wife (Alto) continue in the same vein with four-part choral interspersions from the crowds soldiers and priests providing acontrast in texture.
