The B Flat Morning and Evening Service and Office for the Holy Communion was composed while Stanford was Organist and Master of the Choristers of Trinity College Cambridge and was already established as a composer and the energetic conductor of the Cambridge University Musical Society. It is for his church music that Stanford is best remembered and this first offering demonstrates his gifts very well.Charles Villiers Stanford was an Irish composer music teacher and conductor who was a founder of the Royal Academy of Music teaching composition to some of the greatest British composers of the twentieth century among them Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams. His own composition always displayed technical mastery and for a while he was a great figure in the world of British musical theatre.

The Gloria in Excelsis was written by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford for the coronation of HM King George V on 22 June 1911. It was an occasion of some note in the annals of British music, for Elgar's Coronation March and Parry's grand festival Te Deum were also heard for the first time that day. In addition, there was music by Thomas Tallis, Orlando Gibbons and Sir John Stainer, as well as by the Master of the King's Music and organist of St George's Chapel, Windsor, Sir Walter Parratt. It was published the following year as part of Stanford's Opus 128, the Festal Communion Service for voices and orchestra, which was also made available with the accompaniment arranged by the composer for organ. However, such was the popularity of the Gloria, a magnificent and wholly representative example of Stanford's genius for church music, that it soon became popular as a separate piece, either with organ or orchestral accompaniment, and it was included in the orders of service for the coronations of HM King George VI on 12 May 1937 and HM Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953. Orchestral material is available on hire (ref. HL189).

The Benedictus and Agnus Dei in B flat is published as part of an ongoing policy to reissue works by Charles Villiers Stanford in the Autograph Edition, in new engravings but as the composer wrote and approved them, with no editing from another hand. Simple in texture but highly effective in performance, these two short movements are a useful addition to the repertoire of music available for a traditional celebration of Holy Communion, and would suit a small church choir with two or three voices per part.
