The title Perfection Studies refers to the pursuit of playing the saxophone perfectly. Therefore, this book is meant for saxophonists who have already reached a fairly advanced standard. The pieces have been written especially for this book by top composers from all over the world including Jan Van der Roost, Jacob de Haan, Martin Ellerby and Otto M. Schwarz. Nearly all aspects of saxophone playing are addressed, including melodic interpretation, tone quality, dynamics and vibrato. The rich range of colours and the melodic character of the studies also make them very suitable for playing at exams or recitals. A demo CD is included with performances byNobuya Sugawa to give you an idea of how the studies should be played.

These Three Studies for Four-handed Piano were conceived of as a triptych whose unifying principles were to be the first-slow-fast movement order of the classical sonata and a symmetrical arrangement of tonalities with A major occupying the centre (F minor- A major- C minor). The term Studies alludes not so much to the 19th century pedagogical concept of pieces-as-exercises, as to an attempt to extend, investigate and study the possibilities of expression and texture of the piano for four hands.

The First Study is generated out of a single rhythmical motif whose development is modified by the intervention of two contrapuntual passages. A certain difficulty of execution arising from the need to cross hands in both sections of the keyboard conforms, in this case, to the traditional definition of study as an exercise focussed on a specific technical problem.

The second piece might be defined as a study of expression, being the explicit disposition of an ostinato accompaniment and two superior voices in conversation. I cannot help, listening to this study, being reminded of the texture of the slow Largo of Bach's Concerto for 2 violins and the manifest pathos of the Andante of Prokofiev's 2nd Violin Concerto.

The Third Study is an exercise in rhythmical interpenetration in which continual changes of accentuation and metre are combined with passages of a light and mellifluous character.

It is a long-standing ambition of mine to supplement this work with three more triptychs and, so, complete a set of twelve studies for four-handed piano.

We have attempted to make each study's phrasing, articulation and where necessary, dynamics consistent with itself, without losing the character and intentions of Arban's manuscript. This edition includes imaginative piano accompaniments written to reflect the nature of the solo part and enhance the soloist's practice whilst lending these studies also to the concert repertoire.

The collection of 130 studies published in two volumes was compiled with the aim in mind to meet the demands of trombone instruction from the highest classes of the music schools to the Academy of Music. lt was selected from those 'traditional' studies which played a decisive role in trombone playing and instruction at the turn of the century and have become the most frequently performed studies since then. However old-fashioned these studies may seem, they belong to the best ones with regard to safe, smooth technique and the elaboration of a nice sound and will definitely serve their pur­pose in the future as well. On compiling the volumes, I have attempted to observe not only asequence according to grade of difficulty but the variety of characters as well. I am convinced that these studies are both useful and, when performed sufficiently colorfully, may contribute to overcoming the monotony of technical exercises. The articulation sings and markings of dynamics, which often differ from the original, try to meet this aim.I had already used this collection of studies before it was printed. 1 had to realize soon that the technical level of the first pieces was too high to assure a smooth transition from the trombone tutors written for beginners. As a result, I found it necessary to start the first volume with a shortened and facilitated version of some studies. Since these pieces in question have been changed considerably, a * beside the composer's name refers to the fact in each case that they are arrangements.I recommend my work to my past, present and future pupilsPál Makovecz.
