Psalm 150 calls out to sing the praise of God on various instruments. Many composers have set this text to music, including Cesar Franck. Nevertheless, Franck, who worked as an organist in Paris for many years and wrote many orchestral works and oratorios, left only a few works on Biblical texts in a large setting. Franck wrote his setting of Psalm 150 in 1883 for the inauguration of the organ in a home for the blind in Paris. The basically simple, homophonic choral writing was conceived with the young students in mind. Franck regularly articulated the texture of the full orchestra with percussion and harp entries evocative of tone-painting. It is a short, effective work that has been making a strong impact at many choral concerts ever since its publication by Breitkopf & Hartel in 1896.

Cesar Franck (1822-1890) is now regarded as one of the most important French composers and organists of his time. Les Beatitudes, his monumental oratorio setting the text from Jesus's Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5,3ff.), is regarded as his most important work and is on an equal footing with the great oratorios of the 19th century. But Franck himself did not live to hear the extremely successful first performance in summer 1891.Through its symmetrical dramatic structure, the work conveys the idea of a great arch. A short prologue is followed by eight movements in which the words of Christ are contrasted with earthly scenes. The choir has an important role as commentator on the events. The conclusion of the work is an overwhelming hymn - the entry into paradise. With this Carus edition, the Beatitudes is published in a modern, thoroughly-researched Urtext edition for the first time. The orchestral scoring is typical of the French orchestra of the time. Both the number of soloists and the size of choir required can be reduced by skilful allocation of the roles. The score offers many practical performance suggestions, based on the editor's own experience in trying these out. A new vocal score, prepared with ease of playability in mind, replaces the historic reprint edition previously available from Carus. Ambitious amateur choirs can also perform this magnificent work.

LES DJINNS was written at the request of pianist Caroline Montigny-Rémaury, though César Franck's (1822-1890) short work for piano and orchestra was instead premiered on March 15, 1885 by Louis Diémer with the Société Nationale de Musique. The piece is inspired by the poem of the same name in Victor Hugo's LES ORIENTALES, as Franck represents the idea of the mysterious and supernatural forces tearing the nocturnal sky through their passage. Franck was impressed with the virtuosic playing and interpretation of Diémer in this difficult work, which sparked a renewed interest in the piano for the composer.
