(Otto Depenheuer).

The present setting of Psalm 150 from 1884 is one of Cesar Franck's late works. It shows the highly individual elements of the composer's style in concentrated form: a consciously symphonic idiom, bold and unmistakable harmonies, largely characterized by their chromaticism and unusual concepts of form. The popularity of this work has largely been hindered by the need for large instrumental resources for so short a piece. The present arrangement of the Psalm for choir, strings and organ (ad libitum: harp and percussion) is intended as a compromise that retains much of the original sonority, but keeping the work within the scope and possibilities of churches desirous of performing works with instrumental accompaniment within the context of liturgy. Score available separately - see item CA.4009800.

Unlike the well-known settings of the Seven Last Words by Schutz or Haydn, in his opulently scored composition Franck provides commentary to the words of Jesus with excerpts from the Old and New Testaments as well as from portions of the Stabat Mater. In his transposition of the Latin text into music Franck reveals a rich palette of compositional parameters: different-sized ensembles, exciting orchestration, formal variety and sophisticated harmony. Laments, simple passages for the choir in unison, passages with great drama, melodic shapes filled with sweetness convey to the listener a multi-layered impression of a composition stamped by a strongly personal will to expression. The Mass in A major published here is one of the compositions which Franck wrote for liturgical use at Ste. Clotilde. It received ist first performance there, under the composer's direction, on the 2nd April 1861. Regarding the vocal scoring of the Mass it is noticeable that only a few bars in the Ordinarium movements are expressly given to the solo vooices. Several other passages can, however, by sung by the soloists rather than the choir, and in this edition these are indicated. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4064600.
