Gabriel Pierné (1863-1937) was a French composer, conductor and organist. Despite being predominantly remembered as a conductor, his Impromptu-Caprice remains a popular performance piece in the advanced harpists' repertoire. Pierné studied at the Paris Conservatoire before taking up the position of chief conductor for the concert series, Concerts Colonne in 1910. He remained in the post until 1933, and during this time, he notably conducted the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's The Firebird. Pierné composed for a variety of instruments, Impromptu-Caprice being one of four solo works by the composer. This Pierné piece for harp contains many characteristics typical of the French style, such as significant tempo changes, flourishes of semiquavers and many alterations in dynamics. Impromptu-Caprice is a varied piece essential to the repertoire of aspiring harpists.

Sinfonia and Caprice is comprised of two contrasting sections. Both sections are characterised by the arrangement of the eight voices into two four-part groups that play in dialogue with each other.The first, slow movement is a Sinfonia in the baroque sense?a majestic opening work. With its dotted rhythms and semiquaver runs, the movement is reminiscent of a French overture. The fast second movement, the Caprice, features an almost unbroken galloping rhythm. In this section an energetic main theme in a minor key plays in alternation with a lyrical subsidiary major theme. The work closes with a triumphant fanfare.Het werk Sinfonia and Caprice bestaat uit twee contrasterende gedeelten. Het arrangement van beide delen wordt gekenmerkt door de verdeling van de acht partijen in twee groepen van vier, die in dialoog met elkaar spelen.Het eerste, langzame deel is een majestueuze sinfonia in barokke sfeer. Expressive playing, some simple counterpoint, and a touch of pizzicato characterize this contemporary sounding but accessible piece in two contrasting sections, slow and lively. Duration: 3'15.The definition of Air is a tune or melody, but often it is used to describe a piece that is lyrical in nature, as in the first section of this piece. The next section of the piece is called Caprice, which is the French word for capriccio. The term capriccio has been used as the title for a variety of different types of works throughout music history. It is used here in its literal definition which describes the fanciful, capricious nature of the second section of the piece.As part of the development of the piece, the minor material from the Air is used as bridge material in the Caprice section. The Air and Caprice should be very contrasting in style. Play the Air very sustained and chorale-like and the Caprice, light with forward motion. The tempo of the Caprice should not be too fast; however, the tempo can be adjusted down to accommodate the ability level of your ensemble. Bowings have not been over-marked, and no slurs are used; feel free to alter it if necessary.It has been my pleasure to have had the opportunity to write this piece. “To this day, Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments, despite being a violinist himself. His Caprice No. 2 for Trumpet with Piano accompaniment is no exception to the composer's success. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, Bozza won prizes for Violin, conducting and composition, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes, whilst remaining a prominent composer. Composed in 1978, Bozza's Caprice No. 2 addresses advanced aspects of the Trumpet, including complex rhythms, exploited tonalilty and articulation. As music educationalist, Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions, ”“his works reveal melodic fluency, elegance of structure and a consistenly sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.”“&rdquo.

“André Jolivet (1905-1974) established his love for composition from a young age. This remained throughout his life, and he held the post of Professor of Composition from 1966-1970 at the Paris Conservatoire. Caprice Fantasy for Flute and Piano was published in 1954, and remains highly regarded. Jolivet, himself a cellist, wished to explore composition for all instruments, and therefore has a considerable number of works in all fields. The composer's style is also known for its spirituality, and the desire to associate the everyday with the magical, and the human with the universal. Jolivet draws on acoustics and atonality, as heard in his Caprice Fantasy. The piece requires advanced skills due to its use of complex rhythms and exploited tonality. For all advanced flautists, Jolivet provides an exciting, alternative piece for the instrument's repertoire.&rdquo.

The Caprice d'Adieu (autograph unknown) is appended to Eduard Eliason's Six Caprices Caractéristiques pour le Violon, Op. 12, which was published in Mayence by B. Schott in 1833. This piece, which Paganini dedicated to Eliason, is part of a series of compositions for violin solo that have been widely ignored by both performers and scholars of the great Genoese musician. It is a composition whose size and structure (A-B-A, with two refrains) follows the pattern of some of his Capricci, Op. 1, but, unlike these proper studies, the Caprice d'adieu is lighter and more lively in character. Although not as brilliant, musically, as the Capricci, it still contains some original musical ideas, mostly articulated in two parts with a few complex technical passages and a central, contrasting section featuring different dynamics and a range of chords and trills. This critical edition is based on the first edition and is collated with the most important nineteenth and twentieth-century editions.
