Capriccio Italien is based on Italian folk songs and was composed by Tchaikovsky in 1880. The work was inspired by his trip to Rome which he took with his brother Modest. Arranger/composer David Bobrowitz has utilized most of the capriccio’s themes in order to create a Fantasy that captures the essence of Tchaikovsky’s music. Although the music has been technically reduced for grade 3 players, it still retains all the fire and energy of the masterwork. The Fantasy utilizes a somewhat different ending then the original, but it will all sound like vintage sounds Tchaikovsky. And it makes for a wonderful selection that will appeal to players and audience alike!

Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) composed Capriccio Italien, Op. 45, in 1880 following a trip to Rome with his brother, Modest. Originally titled Italian Fantasia, the work incorporates the music he heard from his room and on the streets during Carnivale in a single fantasy, using the orchestra to create a uniquely Tchaikovsky sound portrait. It was first performed on December 18, 1880, by the Russian Musical Society Orchestra, Nikolay Rubinstein conducting, and it has been a mainstay in concert halls since. Yet this did nothing to hamper the worldwide success of the work, and Tchaikovsky's composer colleagues also culled ideas from it: a few years later, Tchaikovsky himself was the dedicatee of Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnol.Mit seinen Urtext-Studienpartituren setzt Breitkopf nicht nur auf eine bewahrte Tradition, sondern blickt offenbar auch guten Mutes in die Zukunft. Pjotr Iljitsj Tchaikovsky is famous for his fantastic moving melodies. Different to many of his other romantic Russian contemporaries, Tchaikovsky had a particular feel for the European music taste of music, which made him immensely popular. In this accessible compilation, arranger Wil van der Beek uses a selection of Tchaikovsky’s most beautiful melodies from works including Capriccio Italien, String Quartet No. 1 and his famous Piano Concerto No.1.
