The melodies from George Gershwin's (1898-1937) musicals, from 'Porgy and Bess', from orchestral pieces like 'Rhapsody in Blue' or 'An American in Paris', we all know them! But the career of the young musician started as a pianist in a music publishing house where he was to encourage customers to buy music by playing it. Soon he began to compose music himself and caught the attention of the Broadway, which paved the way to his international career. Inspired by Frederic Chopin's 24 Preludes, he began to write his own 'Preludes' for the piano in the mid-1920s: Of the five preludes composed by him, he used two for the violin composition 'Short Story' and presented the other three at a concert on 4 December 1926. These 'Preludes' combine classical moments and jazz elements into an effective whole and can be played individually or as a little jazz sonata (fast - slow - fast). Thanks to the present arrangement, the charming miniatures are now available in a version for solo instrument and piano accompaniment.

Saggi di Robert Abels, Fabian Brinkmann, Bernd Edelmann, Thomas Emmerig, Vincent Grau, Hartmuth Kinzler, Michael Klaper, Beate Angelika Kraus, Heinz von Loesch, Albrecht von Massow, Gerhard Poppe, Michael Raab, Wilhelm Seidel, Bernhold Schmid, Christian Speck, Glenn Stanley, Andreas Traub, Reinhard WiesendMusical composition is always related to the work's realisation in sound. A written form is required in order to give shape to the compositional intention. Consequently it is text, the musical text, which mediates between the act of composition and the performance. The object of the musical edition is to prepare the text so that the will of the composer is presented to the musicians in a way that allows the composition to become realised musically. The edition thus inevitably establishes a conflict between divergent orientations, such as between science and practice, preservation and actualization, as well as textual criticism and hermeneutics. Because his editorial decisions are fundamentally interpretive the editor must know and understand the historical and hermeneutical problems of his subject, especially when it comes to determining what stage of the work is to be presented. The editing of music is not always restricted to mediation; it may also represent a translation. The present collection of essays -- all but one, in German -- is a Festschrift for Petra Weber's 60th birthday. It combines contributions on music and music editing by Robert Abels, Fabian Brinkmann, Bernd Edelmann, Thomas Emmerig, Vincent Grau, Hartmuth Kinzler, Michael Klaper, Beate Angelika Kraus, Heinz von Loesch, Albrecht von Massow, Gerhard Poppe, Michael Raab, Bernhold Schmid, Wilhelm Seidel, Glenn Stanley, Andreas Traub, and Reinhard Wiesend. Among the composers treated, Ludwig van Beethoven will occupy a prominent place. Special consideration will also given to Didier Lupi, Francesco Cavalli, Johann Sebastian Bach, Johann Adolf Hasse, Franz Schubert, Giovanni Simone Mayr, Ferruccio Busoni, Carl Orff, and Sandor Veress.

Whereas in past decades Urtext editions with assorted aspirations and readings by various editors were the primary points of departure in addressing Beethoven's piano sonatas, today it is more often the question of what significance so-called instructive editions have in the history of interpretation, what additional benefit is generated from them, and wherein lies their legitimacy. Unlike his teacher Hans von Bulow in his edition of the sonatas, Lamond did not allow any intervention in the music text per se. His indications give instead interpretive approaches, additionally inspiring today's musicians in the realization of the musical composition. By the beginning of the 20th century he was a successful and celebrated pianist, concertizing in the US and across much of Europe. He repeatedly caused a stir with his Beethoven projects such as performing sixteen sonatas as well as the Diabelli and Eroica variations within four days at the Queen's Hall in London (1925). Dating from this period is also his edition of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas that first appeared from Breitkopf & Hartel in 1923. Frederic Lamond thus epitomizes Beethoven interpretation. Even today his name is still associated primarily with Beethoven. The present ,,Instructive Edition of Beethoven's 32 Piano Sonatas is a part of the ,,Breitkopf Originals series on the occasion of Beethoven's 250th Birthday in 2020. Apart from the established Urtext editions, this reissue opens up a fascinating view on the interpretation- and performance practice of one of the most important Beethoven interpreters in the 19th and 20th century. The Scotsman and his Beethoven - The 32 Piano Sonatas in the Instructive Edition, edited and supplied with fingerings by Frederic Lamond.

The seven chorale fantasias by Max Reger are among the most important of organ repertoire ? masterpieces blending chorale melody and programmatic music based on the text of the chorales.
Published on the occasion of the composer's 150th birthday, this fundamentally revised Urtext edition, in two volumes, is edited by the internationally renowned organist and Leipzig professor of organ Martin Schmeding.
As one of the most influential Reger interpreters, Schmeding not only includes the latest research, but also addresses the need for a contemporary interpretation of the chorale fantasias on modern organs. The edition includes all the original dynamic and agogic indications (including continuation lines to cresc., etc., which are missing in many modern editions), as well as all the original registration and manual indications.
Martin Schmeding's new edition provides for the first time an original musical text that combines the requirements of a modern Urtext edition with the demands of a practical edition.
