A collection of 5 short works in pop style which can be performed by any kind of compilation. The titles can be presented on the programme as separate works but the Universal Band Collection can also be performed as a complete suite. From a didactic point of view it is a suitable work to teach musicians something about the structure in music. For this purpose not only the big structure but also the small structure was kept very clear.Western Girl : A girl from the west of the USA rides her horse across the prairie dreaming of her future. The rough structure: introduction - theme in a blues scale - the same thing in a different instrumentation - finale.Just a ballad : A balladin pop style with a rough A-B-A form. First there is the introduction of the main theme (A) then follows a tenor melody in minor with a rhythmical reference to the main theme (B). Finally there is the main melody performed tutti with a different rhythm in the drums (A').Play the Game : An English saying meaning: play fairly. Playful music in up-tempo with a wink to China where almost all games are manufactured nowadays. Once again an A-B-A structure here.San Diego : A Mexican fugitive enjoys his freedom in America but also remembers his place of birth with melancholy. A sad minor melody with a straight trendy beat appears twice. The second time it has a slightly different instrumentation in which the muted trumpets represent the Mexican feeling.Final Dance : Eventually there is a dance with an introduction in renaissance style followed by a fast dance in rock style. All this composed in a classical song structure: introduction verse bridge chorus shortened verse bridge chorus chorus.

5 Original Pieces for Brass Quartet. A composition in five movements that sound as if from a former age. They are in fact newly composed pieces but, stylistically speaking, are ?historically accurate?. They can be performed separately or one after the other. The important thing is that the lead part at any point is given enough ?space? in terms of dynamics and overall balance. Old music, newly composed, at times cheerful and at others solemn, which create the very special charm of this composition.

Glitter and glamour good-looking people a lot of Bling Bling and fast cars ? images like these will cross our minds when we think of the movie world. However reality proves to be different : as a rule a tremendous amount of work will have been done on the set before a film is ready to be shown on the big screen. A visit to an actual movie set inspired John Emerson Blackstone to write a composition bearing the same name. He had both seen a number of characteristic attributes and heard the typical phrases used in film making and he incorporated them into ?On the Movie Set? . In the first part ?The Clapboard? a ?director?s assistant? is supposed to shout ?Quieton the set?? and ?Action!? as is done before a real scene is shot. Subsequently in order to create the right atmosphere the clacking of a ?Clapboard? should be heard. During a romantic scene we should be transported to another world by means of sweet sounds in the background so romantic music is of course heard in the next part ?Love Scene?. At the end of a long working day ?It?s a wrap? is called on the set to inform everyone that the filming on that day is completed. Now there is only one more thing left to dream of : an Oscar..... Perf. Note: The use of the right props will add to the performance and appreciation of ?On the Movie Set?. A red carpet and a glamorous reception should give your audience the feeling they are attending a real ?opening night?!

In imitation of the huge âHouse rageâ (at the end of the eighties) John Emerson Blackstone composed âHouse of Danceâ for youth orchestra. It proved to be a success. House owes its name to the place where this music was âdevelopedâ i.e. an old night club called âThe Warehouseâ in Chicago. Many subcultures followed. Excuse me may I play along? Could you step aside please? âStep Asideâ is a pleasant competition both between two tempi and among the different parts. After a short slow introduction it is the drummer who without asking the questions above sets the high pace. As soon as this rapid movement has been established âpart 1â takes the lead but the other parts obviously donât want to miss a thing and follow in rapid succession. At the end of the composition the various parts âcompeteâ in order to be able to play solo for a while but soon others join in again asking âExcuse me may I play along?â

In a career that's spanned five decades, composer John Williams has scored fewer than five Westerns which, judging from his exemplary work on this 1972 score The Cowboys, seems something of a shame. Williams offers up a robust, brassy score that leans heavily on the same prime Aaron Copland influences that informed Elmer Bernstein's Magnificent Seven and Jerome Moross's The Big Country.

The word âtsunamiâ is of Japanese origin. When you look it up in a dictionary you will find that it means âa great sea wave produced by submarine earth movement or volcanic eruptionâ. A megatsunami is the superlative of this awesome expressionof power that nature can create and has catastrophic consequences. When Carl Wittrock completed this composition not many such big earth movements had occurred but since then we have become all too familiar with the disastrousconsequences which a tsunami may have. On the 26th of December 2004 a heavy seaquake took place near the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Tidal waves 10 meters in height ravaged the coastal regions of many countries for miles around. The tsunamitook the lives of thousands of people and destroyed many villages and towns. There are more areas which run the risk of being struck by a tsunami such as the island of La Palma one of the Canary Islands. This island is based on oceaniccrust at a fracture zone and as such is one of natureâs time bombs. The consequences of a natural calamity like a megatsunami are immense. In the case of La Palma the tidal wave will move in the direction of South America where it may reach 50km inland destroying everything on its way. In his composition Wittrock describes an ordinary day which will have an unexpected ending. Right from the beginning there seems to be something in the air the music creating an oppressiveatmosphere of impending disaster. Themes are interrupted broken off suddenly followed by silence suggesting the calm before the storm. Suddenly a short climax (glissandi in the trombone part) indicates the seaquake and the megatsunami isa fact. Hereafter follows a turbulent passage symbolising the huge rolling waves. After natureâs force has spent itself resignation sets in and the composition ends with a majestic ode to nature.
