Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. Originally written in the key of G major, Michael Lorimer has transcribed Bach's Cello Suite 1 (BWV1007) for guitar in D major, with the sixth string dropped to D. In his preface, Lorimer notes that the guitar lends itself well to transcriptions of cello music because the two instruments occupy a similar range and 'the lute-like style-brisé (broken chord) textures of this music invite performance on our modern instrument. ”Guitar transcriptions from cello literature are not new to the guitar repertoire. Although the guitar per se did not exist during Bach's time, Bach himself is known to have transcribed his own cello music for the Baroque lute. What sets Lorimer'sarrangement of Suite 1 apart and facilitates performance of this challenging but worthwhile piece, is the fact that he has provided adequate right-hand fingering and an extraordinary amount of left-hand digitation- all contributing to the musical rendition of an outstanding transcription. The St. John Passion ranks alongside the St. Matthew Passion, the Christmas Oratorio, the Magnificat and the B minor Mass as one of the great vocal works from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Leipzig years. In contrast to his other large-scale choral works, however, Bach never gave this work a definitive final form. Rather, for every performance he substantially revised the general concept of the piece and also changed numerous details. All previous editions of the St. John Passion have combined readings from various layers of sources and thus present the work in a form which was never heard during Bach’s lifetime. Consequently, the wish often expressed by conductors to perform anauthentic version by Bach could not be easily achieved. The present critical, new edition of the St. John Passion fulfills this wish and for the first time makes available the complete music of the second version of the work as it was performed under Bach’s direction in 1725. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. The St. John Passion, Bach’s first passion oratorio, can hardly be understood as “one” work. Between 1724 and 1750 the work was performed at least four times in various Leipzig churches under the composer‘s direction and for every one of these occasions it was revised – sometimes quite substantially. This edition presents the St. John Passion in its second version of 1725, of which only excerpts were rendered in the New Bach Edition volume II/4 (1973). This version as well as the last one of 1749 constitute the two versions that have come down to us almost in their entirety. Bach would almost certainly have approved of this arrangement of his organ work (BWV 582) for string quartet by John Cooley, as it conveniently has four contrapuntal parts, and he was well known for making arrangements of his own works, according to instrumental resources at his disposal. Moreover, the parts mostly fit well within the ranges of violin, viola and cello, although notes have been raised by an octave in a few places. This quartet version is therefore simply the four parts written out separately, following Bach?s original version note for note. It is quite ?notey? but straightforward and accessible technically to reasonably good players as there are no tricky rhythms or high notes.
