Particulièrement appréciés, les concertos pour clavecin de Bach sont, selon toute vraisemblance, des transcriptions réalisées par Bach lui-même de concertos pour solistes originellement destinés au violon ou à un instrument à vent de la famille des bois: mais rien ne permet de l’entendre le moins du monde. Dans de nombreux cas, nous ne connaissons pas le modèle original, mais il n’en va pas ainsi pour le Concerto en Ré majeur BWV 1054, qui fut composé vers 1738 en tant que transcription du concerto pour violon en Mi majeur BWV 1042. Et une fois de plus, Bach parvient à transformer comme par magie la partie de violon en une partition brillante et particulièrement idiomatique pour instrument à clavier. Ce n’est pas seulement cette réussite, d’ailleurs, qui explique pourquoi le BWV 1054 fait partie des succès les plus éclatants de l’abondant catalogue de Bach, mais bien plutôt le caractère allègre et enjoué de ses premier et troisième mouvements. It is possible that Bach took this movement from a concerto which he had composed earlier. The first aria, for alto with obbligato oboe and bassoon, could be derived from the middle movement of this concerto. Bach would almost certainly have approved of this string quartet arrangement of his famous concerto for violin and oboe (BWV 1060) by John Cooley as he was well known for making arrangements of his own works, according to instrumental resources at his disposal. Bach himself made an arrangement of this piece for two solo harpsichords and string orchestra. It is quite ?notey? but straightforward and accessible technically to reasonably good players as there are no tricky rhythms or high notes.
