No. 24 is the first of three 'NONcertos' by Richard Ayres, a form that exposes the possibilities and especially the impossibilities of the soloist. As Ayres says himself 'whenever this piece is performed, the reaction is always the same: the audience laughs at first but very soon the embarrassment of the situation becomes clear. By the time it ends you can cut the tension with a knife'.

I have used heterophony (simultaneous variation of a single melodic line) in the choral writing, not just because it is a technique I find rewarding as a composer and as a listener, but also as a way of reflecting the 'shared inheritance' of the prayer - I mean, the many translations in which it exists and is regularly used, and the many denominations and strands of Christianity (and beyond) for whom it is a central, or model, way of speaking to God. My hope is that this piece, which may possibly have some connection to the actual physical sound of Jesus' own words, will provide a meditative and a moving experience, whether performed in a liturgical or concert setting, and whether performed by, or for, Christians or for those of any or no religious faith. (Paul Ayres) Paul Ayres is a British composer and arranger mainly of vocal music, and has been awarded many composition prizes.

Ayres set two verses from a children's poem by the Danish lyric poet and theologian N.F.S. Grundtvig (1783-1872). It tells of the shining star of Christmas. In double-choir structure, alternating between female and male-voice choir, Ayres depicts the shining of the star leading in a great intensification to a magnificent radiating effect. The mainly homophonic work remains in a tonal A major throughout, but contains surprises with some abrupt individual modulations which require secure intonation. It is suitable for both Advent concerts and for Christmas or Epiphany services. For ease of performance the whole piece contains a singable German and English translation.

A quartet of paintings by the American Mark Tobey that displays expanses of white in various shades provides the inspiration for this solo piano work. The images from the paintings are translated into music that plays off static and dynamic forces, interweaving with sounds reminiscent of a Javanese gamelan.

No.42 (In the Alps) could perhaps best be described as a melodrama. It combines many of the subjects that fascinate me: the relationship of text narrative and musical narrative, the history of opera, early cinema, the theatrical practices of the nineteenthcentury, along with the folk and popular music of the Alpine region. A girl (the soprano), stranded on top of an un-climbable mountain peak as a young baby, is taught to sing by the mountain animals. Young Bobli lives in the village far below the un-climbable peak. He was born mute and communicates with the world by playing the trumpet. Bobli hears the soprano's song drifting down into the valley. The soprano listens to Bobli's trumpet tunes blown up to her by the wind. They are both enchanted. The three acts are separated by interludes describing how three animals experience time passing in relation to a musical tempo. Like any self respecting melodrama the text and music combine to depict or imply a wide ranging theatrical adventure, in this piece starting at the Creation (or the big bang), a lonely existence, scenes of rustic village life, some carpentry, many mountain goats, unrequited love, and ending in a quest destined to fail. In a live performance the text [provided with the performance material] isto be projected on a screen behind the musicians in the style of silent movie intertitles. Richard Ayres.

Richard Ayres' Three Small Pieces for String Quartet each have distinct characters that illustrate the composer's vivid imagination and skill for combining energetic, touching and sometimes wild music. The first piece is a short tribute to the Romanian singer Maria Tanase, a long forgotten performer who was once a star in her country. The second is a rough, fast and folk-like section in 11/16 time and the third, subtitled 'Countess Eva von Spendu (on a horse) gallops through the forest (pausing four times to contemplate natural splendour)', contains (in the words of the composer) 'hunting gallops, a Feldmanesque 19 bar blues, some devilish fiddling, moments of repose and contemplation, and a lyrical finale.'.

Will the Rain Fall Down tells the story of a Dust Bowl (1930s) era farmer who, after years of discouragement, still retains hope for the future. Ayres' musical story-telling style is haunting, made more so by the addition of optional percussion. Written for tenor-bass choirs of all sizes and abilities, the TB1, TB2 or TB(B) flexible voicing option is sure to meet the needs of any tenor-bass ensemble.

Interestingly, Ayres combines the Latin text of the hymn with his translation here: in the style of a free motet-like cantus firmus, he interprets the Latin text impressively in music, making use of glissandi, wide leaps and unison twelve-tone linear construction for the dramatic second verse with its deceptive vision of night. He places the motet sections after the translated text, but quite simply with the Gregorian cantus firmus and in the style of medieval organum, however with interesting, diatonically written dissonant sounds. This rewarding piece is challenging, but well worth singing in a concert or church service.

When I found Born on a Fishing Boat in an issue of Poetry While You Wait in Colorado Springs, Colorado, I was immediately struck by Ms. Lius simple, evocative words. While I sat in the cafe on a cold January day waiting for my coffee, I closed my eyes and envisioned what it might be like to lie on my back in a small fishing boat and look up at the stars. I stole the free booklet of poetry and trudged home in the snow, already hearing the piano part in my mind. I would encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about Mei-Li Lius life and work to purchase her book Ten Thousand Miles from Home, published by Dragon Press (ISBN: 9780976137009). I sincerely hope I have honored her art with this setting.
