Hélas Ruth un tantinet dure d?oreille confond les termes pilote et pirate et met Frédéric en apprentissagechez une bande de charmants pirates orphelins. À ses vingt et un ans il est libéré de son contrat d?apprentissage et peut réintégrer un modèle de société respectable avec pour obligation de dénoncer ses anciens compagnons. Ruth révèle alors que Frédéric est né une année bissextile un 29 février : il n?a donc en réalité que cinq ans ! Il restera donc apprenti pirate jusqu?à son vingt et unième anniversaire. Entre temps Frédéric s?éprend de Mabel une des nombreuses filles du Major-Général Stanley. L?opérette touche à sa fin et les quiproquos s?enchaînent. Les pirates le Major-Général et toutes ses filles se côtoient dans une joyeuse cacophonie à laquelle un sergent de police timoré réussit à mettre un terme en invoquant la loyauté envers la reine Victoria. Et tout le monde cède.Vers la fin de l?Acte II Frédéric et Mabel chantent un duo d?amour d?une beauté envoûtante ?Ah leave me not to pine alone and desolate? (?Ah ne me laisse pas languir et désespérer?). Philip Sparke en a réalisé un arrangement pour Flûte Traversière et Saxophone Alto (ou Clarinette).

Written at the deathbed of Arthur Sullivan’s brother Fred in 1877 and setting words by Adelaide Anne Proctor The Lost Chord was immediately successful and became the biggest sensation of any song in its decade. Of all the drawing room ballads of the Victorian era The Lost Chord has remained alive in the popular imagination. This arrangement for solo Organ is true to the original without overplaying its drama and restores the eponymous 'lost chord’ to the Organ from whence it originally came. Composer Arthur Sullivan is known the world over for his operatic collaborations with W S Gilbert including H M S Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance among many others. ButSullivan was also a composer of a host of other works among them operas Orchestral works ballets and hymns and church pieces.

The composer Arthur Sullivan and the dramatist W. S. Gilbert joined forces in 1871 and over the next 25 years produced a series of 14 comic operas. Sullivan's tuneful and memorable melodies and Gilbert's amusing words and dialogue - which frequently made fun of British national characteristics and institutions such as the Royal Navy - are as fresh and amusing today as they were over a hundred years ago. Songs vary immensely in style and apart from the clearly comical include others such as 'The flowers that bloom in the spring' that though at first suggesting seriousness on close examination reveal deliberately ludicrous words and ridiculous sentiments - all to thedelight of the audience!
