From the composer of Festival of Carols and The Winter Rose comes a cantata that celebrates the legacy of early American carols and hymnody. Composed in the spirit of folk music, the cantata combines traditional sounds with more rustic elements creating a blend that is fresh and pleasing. Popular American carols like Away In a Manger and O Little Town of Bethlehem dance with traditional spirituals such as Children, Go Where I Send Thee and Go, Tell It on the Mountain. Sacred Harp tunes are re-tooled for Advent and stand alongside new versions of Shaker hymns and Appalachian melodies. Thoughtful narration weaves the movements together in a meaningful tapestry of song and Scripture. Two orchestral options are available allowing maximum flexibility in performance. A full line of support products is also available. Appalachian fiddle music, based on the musical traditions of the people who settled in the mountainous regions of the southeastern United States, is widely-known and played throughout North America and parts of Europe because of its complex rhythms, its catchy melodies, and its often-ancient-sounding stylistic qualities. The authors explore the lives and music of 43 of the classic Appalachian fiddlers who were active during the first half of the 20th century. Some of them were recorded commercially in the 1920s, such as Gid Tanner, Fiddlin? John Carson, and Charlie Bowman. Some were recorded by folklorists from the Library of Congress, such as William Stepp, Emmett Lundy, and Marion Reece. Others were recorded informally by family members and visitors, such as John Salyer, Emma Lee Dickerson, and Manco Sneed. All of them played throughout most of their lives and influenced the growth and stylistic elements of fiddle music in their regions. Each fiddler has been given a chapter with a biography, several tune transcriptions, and tune histories. To show the richness of the music, the authors make a special effort to show the musical elements in detail, but also acknowledge that nothing can take the place of listening. Many of the classic recordings used in this book can be found on the web, allowing you to hear and read the music together.

This arrangement of the beautiful Appalachian carol is very expressive and meant to be performed with much freedom and thoughtful attention to the words, dynamic contrasts, and tempo alterations. Once you have learned this piece and are familiar with these changes to volume and tempo indications, watch your director very carefully for cues for these subtleties. It is very important that you stay together and make these changes as a unified group. The effect will be amazing! Even though this song begins very gently, be certain to pronounce your words carefully and with good diction. There are many words that sound similar: wonder / wander / under, for example. The beauty of the poetry and alliteration will be lost on your listener if your lyrics cannot be understood. Also, the story is in the words, carried to the listener on the wings of the melody and arrangement. Always, no matter what your volume level and even at the very softest levels, pronounce, pronounce, pronounce! Enjoy the ethereal beauty and reflective musings of this meditative piece! ~ Ruth Elaine Schram. This arrangement of the beautiful Appalachian carol is very expressive and meant to be performed with much freedom and thoughtful attention to the words, dynamic contrasts, and tempo alterations. The book, musician, entertainer, teacher, and recording artist Carol Stober provides melody lines, lyrics, chord symbols, and melody tablature for 35 tunes she learned in Appalachia. The stories woven through the music portray a mixture of life situations that were ever-present in the difficult struggle for survival of our ancestors. The lyrics of many of these songs, although sometimes harsh, give insight into the values of the Appalachian people. The autoharp tablature provides detailed indications for different types of thumb and finger strokes, plucking, and string pinching.

Snowy hilltops, timeless family traditions, and the warmth of a hearth---the atmosphere of a Smoky Mountain Christmas is captured in this arrangement of three traditional Appalachian carols arranged by Andrew Dabcyznski. The simple modal melodies of Star of the East and Babe of Bethlehem are passed throughout the orchestra, before concluding with the stirring spiritual Rise Up Shepherd and Follow. The keys, meters, and bowings are all playable by second-year string students, but intermediate and advanced students also will find this to be a satisfying holiday concert piece. (3:30).
