‘The Fellowship’ is a musical homage to friendship and camaraderie, symbolised in two alternating, complementary themes. The themes are based on popular songs from two sister municipalities, one lying in Normandy (France), and the other in Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany). Through the merging of their songs in this composition, their bond of friendship is sealed for eternity. This work is a close-up of the encounters and relationships of trust between people, following the idea that friendship lasts forever.” After the passing of Satoshi Yagisawa’s close friend and work partner, Tsutomu Murata, a designer of Neo Create in August 2020, the composer began work on this piece. Murata performed music for audiences primarily as a leader and conductor of Kurume City Brass, a group which is active in Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan. Eternal Frienship depicts a five-minute chorale which explores “how music can convey that a close friend is indispensable to you, more broadly, everyone to someone,” much like how Murata conveyed the appeal of music to his audiences. Under the direction of the composer himself, the work had its world premiere and was recorded with the Kobe College Wind Orchestra. 2020 8 “ ”.

The commissioner of this piece, a conductor and friend of the composer, asked Satoshi Yagisawa to compose an item in the choral style of some of his earlier works. The result is the classic warm and gentle sound of Largo. A perfect moment of serenity for any concert.

Spirit of Endeavour is a virtuosic piece of music with a positive musical message. It tells the story of a wind band embracing hard work, friendship, musical excellence, love, marriage and birth, as well as the sad loss of cherished members. Composer Philip Sparke decided to salute the history of the Canadian concert band 'Harmonie de Charlesbourg' with a work that falls into two contrasted sections. One Vision deals with forming the band and the subsequent united desire to create an ensemble espousing the idea of musical perfection. The Pursuit of Excellence salutes the 20 years of hard work of the wind band. This concert work ends with a chorale of thefull band, symbolising the fulfilment of a united dream! This work was composed as a commission by the Aikodai Meiden High School Symphonic Band, for the 50th anniversary of their annual concert; the title A Golden Jubilation is a reference to this. The close friendship between Hiroki Ito, theconductor of the band, and Satoshi Yagisawa resulted in this brilliant and exhilarating fanfare of approximately two minutes in length; the piece is ideal to use as a concert opener. The original composition was arranged for an extremely wide rangeof instruments and a band of 200 musicians, including a separate ‘banda’, harp and a variety of special instruments. Diamond Concerto was commissioned by Musikverein Mörschied from Germany - Dr. Eric Grandjean, conductor - for a special concert featuring Steven Mead as guest soloist. Together they gave the world premiere on 28th April 2012 in the town theatre of Idar-Oberstein.The commission is a highlight in the 30-year friendship between composer and soloist, which has included many mutual CD projects and concerts and, now, a concerto. Sparke had Steven Mead’s special euphonium sound in his head throughout the composition process and made free use of the variety of styles which the world-renowned virtuoso has made his own during his highly successful solo career. The village ofMörschied lies to the west of Frankfurt am Main in the area known as the German Road of Precious Stones, which is famous for its thriving gem industry. Because of this it was decided to give the commission a local connection by choosing the title, Diamond Concerto. Each of the three movements is named after a famous diamond:1 EARTH STARis rather stern in mood, opening with a free fantasy for the soloist over a static chord from the band. This leads to an Allegro Moderato in minor mode where small motives are gradually repeated and developed by both band and soloist.2 OCEAN DREAMuses a varied quote from the composer’s Music for Battle Creek, including a melting slow melody that was originally written with Steven Mead in mind.3 BLUE HEARTwas written, at Steven Mead’s suggestion, in bebop style and takes the form of a jazz waltz. The quasi-improvisatory central section features a call-and-response passage for the soloist and upper woodwinds.Soloist: Difficulty 6Diamond Concerto is available for euphonium and piano (AMP 374-401) as well as for euphonium and concert band (AMP 354-010).
