All the Difference in the World

In this lesson Fernando Perez teaches several evocative instrumentals from different world music styles. The tunes are performed in standard as well as alternative tunings. Fingerstyle techniques are used throughout the lesson. Two tunes are arranged for slide Guitar. Perez takes you on a globetrotting voyage where you will explore: How to understand the sound and techniques found in the music of the Balkans Japan Brazil Hawaii Malawi and Argentina and how to apply theses to the Guitar. Cool and unusual rhythms applied to the guitar in a way that goes further than just strumming chords but also how to make guitar arrangements with theserhythms. Origins and relations between world music styles in order to better understand and perform them. Many interesting fingerstyle Guitar tricks and techniques. Main scales used in these instrumentals. Understanding grooves how to feel and apply them as you play the music. How to further develop these tunes as well as creating new ones. For Solo Piano-One of the most exciting composers of his generation Jonathan Cole was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize in 1999.?Trapdoor? was written as a tribute to the great film director Alfred Hitchcock in the year of hiscentenary 1999. The piece has four sections: Fanfares Trap Nervous Shadows and Trapdoor. The last being after the music falls through a trapdoor and into a totally different world. It is a skittish piece and works with a backdrop provided by theresonance of silent chords held with the sostenuto pedal.

For Violin and Cello.Published 2008.Dedicated to Peter Sheppard Skaerved and Neil Heyde.'This music was composed during my DAAD residency in Berlin in October ? November 2007. If I were to describe itin one sentence I would say that it is based on the idea of 'two things seen/heard as one'.'a2 (a due) is a well-known term to musicians; it is often found in orchestral scores indicating a given passage that is to be playedby two instruments of the same family. Although violin and cello could well be regarded as 'first cousins' of the string family the literal implementation of the term a2 as a 'compositional strategy' would have been too much (!)for a piece of chamber music consisting of no more than two players. Not surprisingly this never happens in this work; in fact the opposite is true: regardless of how it appears on paper (i.e. on one or two staves) the musicfor each instrument is constantly based on two layers.'This musical 'interpretation' of the title gives an indication as to how the textural format of the piece operates. However this was by no means the only thought that'preoccupied' my mind whilst composing this music. Berlin made a profound impression on me. The remnants of the wall in Bernauer StraÃ?e and the cobbled two-stone line tracing the wall across where it once stood ? a clear reminderof what not so long ago there were two different worlds in one city ? provoked a strikingly dramatic effect. Border death-strip killing and escape to freedom had a particularly evocative resonance especially of the time when Ilived for three years in a remote town in Southern Albania right at the border with Greece. There there was a nameless road whose destination the authorities did not want you to know but the locals called it the'death-road'.'In no way programmatic in this context the extra-musical dimension of the principal idea is very much part of the piece. Programme Note WHIRLS´ WORLD (1970) for wind quintet. ?Whirl´s World? was composed in 1970 as one of a series of works which explored the so-called musical ´difference-phenomenon´. This term (which I coined in connection with a series of lectures in California that year) indicates a motivic duplicity in which two - often very simple - melodic ideas come ´out of phrase´ with each other giving rise to a course of constantly changing conditions. In Whirl´s World the difference phenomenon is heard from the beginning where a three-note motif and a four-note motif are set against each other. It all proceeds lake a lightning-fast series of chess moves; first notenumber 1 of the three-note motif is moved then note number 1 of the four-note motif thereafter note number 2 of the three-note motif - and so on. This fast opening flows into a slow section in which the differences now appear as ´fluctuations´ between very closely related tones (of which one is sung by the musician). There is only one movement built up as an organic growth from slow to furiously fast whirling and back again to slow which can be heard as ´slow-motion whirls´ as a water-world of ripples and bubbles. All this is framed by the introduction described above and a corresponding conclusion in which the movement is now descending ending in the resolute bass full-stop. Per Norgård
