Alchemy is an ancient philosophy that sought to turn iron into gold. The composer saw a parallel in music: taking the notes of a scale and turning them into music seems just as magical. The notes are like iron and the process of turning them into music makes them as precious as gold.

Alchemy is usually defined as the Medieval search for the means of transmuting base metals, such as lead into gold and silver. The alchemist hoped to find the mysterious combination of words or elements to attain the goal. Our scene begins with a dramatic invocation to the spirits of the metals, followed by a chant to empower the energy necessary for the change. A procession of the alchemist's apprentices is heard as they add their presence to the effort and a final surge as the transformation is realized. Or is it? Careful execution of the dynamic variations within the work is essential to realize the desired effect. A metal plate can be substituted for the break drum. The tap on stands instruction in mm. 46 - 52 should be performed with a metallic beater on a metal stand. Relevance in the Choral Art outlines the alchemy of relevance and its role in offering meaningful programs and concerts for today’s audiences. Relevance in the Choral Art is a collection of essays from leading practitioners in the choral field that challenges musicians to reflect on the role choral music plays in today’s culture and what can be done to keep it relevant. Now more than ever we must face the challenge of the relevancy of choral music in our culture, for artistic directors and their role within choral organizations, for members of choral organizations, and for the community that choral music education and performance serves. Tim Sharp along with ten contributing authors explore the idea of relevance and what it means to the choral community, offering wisdom and guidance on a range of topics, including: The alchemy of choral relevance A rubric for achieving choral relevance Programming for choral relevance How to empower minority and underrepresented groups in choral music How to create choral experiences for non-traditional groups, such as those comprised of individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia, cognitive or physical differences, and even those who are incarcerated How to encourage and develop youth leadership in choral organizations When something is relevant it leads somewhere, brings new value, and succeeds in opening a door to something valuable. It gives new information, adds meaning to life, makes a difference, and yields a positive effect. Relevance in the Choral Art provides valuable insights based on research, decades of experience, and practical applications for those looking to revive and grow the relevancy of their work in choral music. Tim Sharp is Executive Director of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), Vice-President of the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM), and Artistic Director of the Tulsa Chorale. Relevancy is at the center of his aggressive agenda in strategic planning and progressive initiatives, achieving unprecedented success and changing the conversation in the choral world. Tim appears regularly as a guest conductor and choral clinician throughout the world. Additional books in this series are Mentoring in the Ensemble Arts, Collaboration in the Ensemble Arts, and Innovation in the Ensemble Arts. Chapter 3: Programming for the Twenty-First Century Handout Chapter 10: Previous i2Choir Concert Programs Chapter 10: Full Color Examples.

This large-scale three-movement work, commissioned by Ray Cramer and the Indiana University Wind Ensemble, embodies the transformation of silence into sound. The opening movement is sparse, utilizing mallet percussion, harp, and piano to create a floating sense of timelessness. Featuring extensive solo flute, this floating texture gradually builds over several minutes, ultimately launching itself into a grandiose, warm, harmonically consonant blanket of sound. The second movement continues the focus on solo flute, and again opens slowly, gradually gaining momentum, but at a faster pace than in the first movement. The music spirals upward and outward, but instead of reaching a plateau, winds itself out and comes to a grinding halt in the upper range of the ensemble. Five brief, solemn chords conclude the movement, which immediately erupts into Movement III, music of unceasing, unsettling, motion, propelled by a driving ostinato which is repeatedly interrupted by bittersweet moments of lyricism, all the while pushing toward an unforgiving climax. The movements may also be performed separately. There is no explicit narrative to the piece, though many particular elements do have personal quasi-biographical significance. Ultimately, this is music of both personal and musical transformation.NOTE: This work is available as a rental item directly from the composer. For details, e-mail rental@stevenbryant.com.
